Hi , my 200TDi goes clonk , clonk ,clonk ,on full lock ( or just approaching full lock ) it sounds really nasty and people look around to see ! but goes when I start to straighten up . I reckon its the CV joints but I would like some opinions on what it could be . Also when on gravel I can hear a wheel sort of locking up slightly as it its skidding until I straighten up .If it is a CV joint then what causes this ? as I like to know whats gone wrong with the component .
Another annoying thing I'd like to sort out is a cloud of smoke on start up , the Disco runs really well with plenty of pull in all gears up steep inclines as well , it starts first time every time with no noticable loss of water or oil over thousands of miles , if it wasnt for the cloud of smoke I'd say the engine was perfect . It has covered 183,000 miles , I was thinking it could be just hardened rubber valve stem seals with oil passing down into the combustion chamber during rest , any ideas ? thank you .

CV's sound right, and it'll be wear and old age. Whilst doing them check the wheel bearings while the hub's out.

Again, this could be general wear and tear of many things, could be oil / crap in the turbo hoses too.

Your cv joints might be knackered but make sure your centre diff lock isn't locked. That would give similar symptoms.

I've just removed and replaced the gearbox to do the clutch , I wonder if I've accidentally selected diff lock !!!! how do I check for this , cheers .

thats how my transfer box signalled imminent demise.....look,I know its a landrover and you expect some gearbox noise, but has it been whining lately? And not about the usual things (lol)........otherwise CVs is prime contender, as the man said, and dont forget them wheel bearings while you're in there,a few quid spent now saves having to take the bugger apart again

The centre diff sounds about right. re the smoke, my 200 tdi does exactly that, puff of smoke and runs/drives perfect with no leaks ect. If the smoke is a dirty puff then all is perfect (no ecu's to alter fueling) if it is blue and the cloud hangs around awhile then valve guides are a good bet.

I am unsure if you can get the valve springs off to get to the rubbers without pulling the head i.e. does the piston rise enough to hold the valves in place?

Someone else help here?

regards

Dave

Yes Dave, it was the diff lock stuck on .With regards the smoke on start up it looks grey not blue . I was wondering if this will effect the MOT ? how bad must things get before a fail ? I've never owned a diesel before so not sure what is tested on exhaust emissions on a 1991 TDi as theres no Cat or sensor .Anyone help ?

MOT test is with engine running. The emissions check is not too severe on older diesels without cat ect.

If the smoke clears when the engine has been running I would not be at action stations yet.

When I'm taking the Disco to the MOT station I always make sure it's properly warmed up, and for at least a mile so I give it full beans through the gears, letting it rev freely. It;s my theory that this will clear out any ****e from the system, and give it it's best shot at passing .. ;)
