Hi all,
Am looking to install a split charge system on my defender 90 and was wondering if anyone can recommend one. Also will I need to upgrade my Alternator?
Thanks for any advice.

Depends what its curently got fitted, I think some had as low as 45amp units, 65 amp being more common and I think D1 200 had a 70 amp unit as std.
You cant run to big a unit as the v belt cant handle it, the v belts as Im sure you know are pretty rubbish to begin with!
A cheap upgrade is the tractor brush box for about 10 quid from ebay, easy to fit 3 screws.

Message Gstuart on here hes bit of a split charge guru, theres also a geezer on ebay and thats all he does.

Genuinely cant remember exactly what it is! spent ages looking on ebay trying to find what I meant but failed, but got the link from some canal boat forum and basically it allows the thing to charge at a higher rate quicker.

I did post a thread about it years ago with the info on it.

Good old google, https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/A127-LUC...TOR-TO-FIT-TRACTOR-AGRICULTURAL-/252515068401

You fit the new brush box, incl the internal plug as per normal then run the extra orange wire back to the battery positive termninal and fit a resistor in line fooling the reg /brush pack to give out more welly.
You will have to google to find out the resistor rating, pence Iirc from RS etc.

Did both my 200 and been fine ever since and it must be over 3 maybe 4 years now?

I run a 100amp alternator from a v8 range rover on my 200tdi on the standard v belt setup. It needs tensioning every few months, and I would suggest any larger and a vbelt would not be able to cope.

huh thats awesome, going to do that, i notice voltage drop in the dark winter niughts when everything is on, great tip, thanks

Its still the same when you start it ie the light stays on until you blip the throttle a bit!

Mine does that, its been like that for years, if you have a voltage drop your battery might be on its way out, and/or your earths may need cleaning up.

What sort of solar panel do you have, I was trying to work out what sort of wattage would be a useful size, I kind of guesstimated something like a 60W panel would charge up a battery even if there wasn't any contribution from the alternator... (given a 100ahc battery at 50% discharge)
Would that sound about right - what's the best way to calculate system requirements?

hiya

haven’t got a solar panel as of yet

I’ve got the 2 x batteries totalling 175A/H , will fit a 100 A/H solar panel on the roof along with a MPPT controller as they deal with higher voltages , my alternator is 150 amp which will average around 14-15.5 Vdc

think as a general rule and as you’ve also mentioned total up the A/H of ur batteries then halve it to get ur solar panel capacity

I’ve gone into this in great details over the months so plse feel free to send me a PM and can easily share links etc that I’ve found

ref the t max split charge system I’ve got I keep getting issues with the solonoid so very tempted to buy a dual battery MPPT controller and one panel , that way it will remove the solonoid and then the controller will control both batteries

Also seen some where u can buy an extra display monitor for the inside cabin

hope that helps a little

Wow - Sounds like you've put in the reading :)

am sad like that , lol , have spent a few months reading up on things and more than happy to share what links I have

But alas Can’t read ur pm message I’m afraid because this forum isn’t back up to speed yet
