I wonder if this is a known problem with this engine and if anyone can help me avoid a wild goose chase

A few weeks ago I was driving on the motorway and an engine management system light came. The car switched into limp home mode at around 50pmh. The message only lasted a few seconds, I then pulled over and restarted the engine to find everything was OK. It then happened a few times a week later, but this time I was restricted to about 30 mph. When it happens I get a message on the media screen which says the terrain response system isn’t working, but its hard to know whether this is the cause or a response to it.

I took it to my local garage for diagnostics and it seems the turbo boost pressure sensor (or similar) had thrown a signal and it was suggested we put a new sensor in. We did this on Thursday, but yesterday I got the same message and symptoms again. Again the the engine management message goes after about 5-10 seconds and if I turn the car off and start it again its perfectly fine.

Its hard to be sure, but I feel the car lacks a bit of power and I am struggling to get more than about 22mpg on average, compared with 24 some months ago. It is sometimes taking a few seconds to start, which has never happened before.

Any thoughts on known issues? thanks James

First off, go to a decent LR independant, secondly TDV8 boost faults are usually related to stuck or failed actuators on the turbo's themselves. Good luck, its not cheap...

Not worked on tdv8 but have on tdv6. If it is same will have an egr on each bank. Worth having a look if they are blocked

Get it diagnosed properly, as above, actuators are a good starting point, can be seized in place, best off getting an actuator kit, if i remember correctly, you can only replace one side, the other is a whole new turbo from a dealer, just remember while they are only allowed to supply genuine bits, you can get the other via 3rd parties !

As eightinavee said boost problems normally relate to EGR faults or turbo actuators. Turbo actuators can be freed off with a bit of spray oil and a stiff bit of wire to push and pull the actuator, not easy to get at the turbos though.

Can sometimes be a split hose from intercooler to manifold. Worth checking as it doesn't cost

Think that was me with the EGR ;)

And the winner is Andy J with 'split hose from intercooler to manifold' Thank God!!

Feels like a new car - thanks for your help all
