Hi Folks,

After careful searching for a Freelander we've put a deposit down on a 2005 Freelander 1.8 XEi with 43,00 mils, full LR service history and in quite good nick.

After reading all of the horror stories with ref to to obvious for the petrol versons are we safe with this model of Freelander? My main fear is that we'll get gasket issues ect, if anybody is clued up on this we'd love to hear from you. From what we can gather it's the early models that are affected?

DON'T THRASH IT ,keep a eye on the coolant level(every day)if possible, my 53 plate is on 80,000 plus and is gas converted a recipe for disaster some will say but treat it gently and she will reward you.
OH and get ready for the flack!!
 
after reading the posts on this site with ref to the petrol FL's I wouldn't be lying in stating that I had brown trousers on at the moment, it's only a runabout plus the missus has her blinkers on etc, oh well, it's only money :eek::eek::eek:
 
Maybe yu got a good one - there are a few. But at least you have your eyes open and wont be surprised if anything happens. Check the VCU on a regular basis - thats the expensive one, if you dont pick it up in time.
 
Mad Hat Man is hopefully right - you've picked a good one.

But it's a gamble.

This is why a 1.8 is the same price as a 2 year older TD4!!!

Is it too late to change your plans and choose a TD4?

In your shoes I'd try to get a 'face-lift' version if possible - Oct 2003 onwards.

Maybe cheaper in the long run.

But if you're not doing a high mileage and are going to nurse it along, then ......

it's a 2nd car to really bung the spaniel in the back and go to the woods in etc, it won't cover more than 5,000 mls a year so were only really only buying it as a runabout. by the time we aim to 'chop' it in it will still be under 60,000 mls so it's a fair punt.

we came to a deal on 6900 with a deposit of 300 paid. inside and out the car is remarkably clean plus it's only had one owner from new and next door to my work is a dependable garage that offer a good cheap 'local' service to which i might employ an hour of their time to check it over, a 2nd opinion i guess.

apart from the coolant level sensor which is faulty, upon the test drive when the dealer fired up the FL a warning light (which i cant find in the manual) indicated it needed water/coolant, he filled it up and the light stayed on, he assures me it's a dodgy sensor which he will naturally replace. we took it out for a spin and the engine temp was sitting nicely in the middle. i've had a few cars in my time and i think you just know if a car's been looked after, well i think so anyway!

i dont think it's a million miles out on price, immaculate inside and out, 43k, full LR service, 1 owner 2005, good spec.... .ever bought a convertible in june?

I'd be getting the coolant lever sensor fixed right away.

Sounds like you've got your head screwed on, and going into this with your eyes open.

i have been using a 1.8 petrol as a runabout for the last 3 years . not had a problem with the engine but the three amigos have taken a bit of time to sort out !!
 
hill descent, traction control and abs warning lights all come on together, usually caused by a faulty brake light switch on the pedal, no big deal, parts about £15 and an hour to do yourself
 
I thought it was one of thoses things never to do in life???

Might be more cost effective to lose your deposit, and get something else.
 
I guess it all depends on how far you want to travel, how long you want to wait and what is available in your area but the price is high for a 1.8 petrol. If you are happy with it then that is the main thing. They are not all bad though :)

cheers, we're happy with it, it's practically 'as new', if the darn thing blows up I'll put it right i guess, no sweat, willing to take the punt, plus it's a later 05 model so i'd assume any issues would have been sorted either when the vehicle was manufactured or during it's dealer service history, it's only going to to <10 miles a day, if i was commuting i'd consider something else. :D:D:D
