On getting out of the car tonight I noticed a burning smell and quickly opened the bonnet with a waft of blue smoke coming from the front grille on the left side. It is a relatively new starter motor so I dismissed this.

Not sure if I should drive this tomorrow, but as anyone got any pointers before I check and go to work work tomorrow.

What did it smell like? Acrid? if so , then look for a wire that is short to earth.

If in doubt , I would not drive it.

Cheers

I once fried my alternator by accidentally pouring water into it whilst degreasing that side of the engine. It produced acrid smoke for a surprisingly long time until I disconnected the battery.

Check for sh*te in the alt?

Whilst I wouldn't advise you to follow of my example, I would run the engine to see if it happened again and then look for where the smoke is coming from. Maybe with a fire extinguisher at the ready. Unless of course a good look with a torch pinpoints the problem area first.
