Probably the best simple upgrade for the 2002-2005 (Non-Touchscreen) L322 is changing from the MKIII Sat Nav unit to the MKIV DVD based version.

After a trip into Central London (St Mary Axe, The Gherkin to be precise) the other weekend and the annoyance of London road systems made the MKIII unit really show its age.

The MKIII unit is simple in nature and is adequate for the job but the lack of moving map, slow refresh, annoying interface etc made for a stressful trip into London.

So enough is enough, I headed onto Ebay and searched the myriad of MKIV units out there...they do tend to go pretty quick at the cheaper end of the scale that I was looking at. Cheapest I found was £245 all the way up to £500+!!

After reading reviews, feedback comments and the like, I settled on a unit for £289 + £15 in postage from a seller with 100% feedback and has sold a good few of these units – he is known on the bay as Mirrtzi and is based in Romania.

Now I am very cautious of overseas purchases from the bay, but his/her feedback, comments, reviews etc all painted a very glowing picture and as I would make the payment via PayPal and a Credit Card which offers me online purchase protection I thought I should be well covered for any issues that may occur.

Well, I needn’t have feared – the unit arrived today exceedingly well packaged, well in advance of the anticipated delivery day and so wrapped up in bubblewrap and foam, I think it could have been dropped from a passing Hercules and survive!!

I couldn’t wait so I went immediately to the car to plug it in.....

Open Boot and remove the side panel cover....eject the Map Disc from the old unit

Now WAIT FOR THE RED LIGHT TO GO OUT and then insert prongs into the side holes to release the unit from the cage and slide the unit out

Remove the GPS antenna on the rear and slide over the locking tabs to release the 2 connectors

Plug the new unit in and attach the GPS Antenna cable

Slide into the cage being careful not to trap the cabling

Insert your new DVD based Map Disc – your old one from the MKIII will no longer work so make sure you get the DVD based ‘High’ mapping (not ‘Professional’ as this is for the BMW iDrive system) mine came with a map DVD and the latest V32 firmware with Speed Camera and Perspective mode.

And that is it basically....

I asked the seller to install the Land Rover splash screen which he kindly arranged prior to shipping

The unit introduces a new menu screen

New Config/Settings menu including Split Screen, Camera Alerts and Perspective Settings

Also a new Radio interface too

Here are some of the Nav Shots....

Speed Cameras

Normal Full Screen

Perspective Full Screen

Normal Split Screen during guidance

And I kid you not, it was a 5 minute install – the longest part is waiting for the red light to go off before you unplug the old unit!!!

Map is much improved, you get a moving map display, Postcode Search, a better Points of Interest database, more intuitive interface and faster refresh, reroute and search.

A massive thank you to Mirrtzi from ebay for his/her fantastic service, fast delivery and great communications throughout. :D:D:D

If you are looking for a MKIV unit, and you see one from this ebayer, I can recommend as my transaction was superb.

The unit you changed looks the same as mine in the back of the P38. Of course your actual display is different but i wonder if the mk4 can be fitted in to a P38. I really miss not having Postcode destination and as stated the actual display looks a bit poo with the Mk3 unit

What about off road nav ? Does that still work ?
That's the kick in the pants - not available on this unit....but never used it and I would never venture off road with out an OS map in anycase!

I tried a Mk4 DVD unit in my last p38 but the screen we have in a p38 isn't up to the job. Yes it worked but was dark and post codes only limited number. Got a mk 3 and much better. My latest car has a Mk3 as standard and is fun to put on on long trips with the scale right out and the Garmin doing the nav on a smaller scale - best of both worlds. The Mk4 is in the bottom of my man draw, might come in useful one day.

Plenty of that sort of stuff available from Eastern Europe, it comes out of cars nicked and shipped out there.

Am I getting confused then? Mine is an 02 reg Vogue. Built late o1. Will that be mk 2 or mk 3 sat nav in the boot

Cool cheers, So I'm guessing if I update mine from the mk2 to the mk3 my current disc will still work and I'll get postcode entry???

Mk3 on the L322 isnt postcode entry....not sure on the P38, but if it is the same drive then most likely wont have postcode entry either....

Cheers for the info. If the Mk4 looks pants on the P38 then it's looking a lot less likely to be worth doing with a P38. Just got this e mail back from the guy you used

2002 P38 Range Rover should have a MK3 computer with Range Rover software (the graphics looks like MK2 but with Offroad navigation option). One way to check is to see if your unit looks exactly like the one in this ad. If so, then it's an MK3 computer. Or if you can remove it from your car, you can make a photo of the label and send it to me.

Anyway, if you want an MK3 with BMW software but Range Rover logo(graphics menu like with MK4) I'm sure it will fit Range Rover L322 but I'm not sure about P38. P38 ranges from 199x up to 200x with different modules versions across the years and I can't tell you for sure which is which.

One thing is for sure...if MK3 computers with BMW software works with your vehicle an MK4 would work also. There are no MK4 with Range rover software as it wasn't released on Range Rover vehicles.

But that It's not about hardware difference but about software compatibility between mk4 and the rest of your modules.

Also, full postal code search is only possible on modded MK4 software and a suitable modded MAP DVD. Officially this is not supported but some guys entered the postal codes in UK as POI on map database. That's why it only works if you have that special MAP DVD. Anyway, none of this is possible on MK3 generation computers.

Hi All,

This is my first question on the forum, so please forgive me. I have a '04 Range Rover Vogue and love the thing so far apart from a few niggles.

Sorry for breaking in on the thread, but would like some advice please? When I got the car the Sat Nav (Mk3) didn't work and had to get it repaired. I was actually given 2 units but neither of them worked. I got one repaired (by Mirrtzi in Bucharest) and have to say that he did an amazing job :) and his comms were fantastic throughout (I was also dubious about posting abroad, but no need).

I have been told that as my unit is an original Land Rover unit, then I can not update the software further than the last very basic software (V3.2 I believe?) already on it. However, there seems to be various people out there that have further software for the BMW version? Am I able to update the software to include split screen use and also so that it does not look extremely basic?

Many thanks,

As far as I know, the Mk3 unit can't be updated much further and the graphics are limited to as it stands - hence why the Mk4 unit was developed - to enhance the graphics and increase the configuration options.

The LR Mk3 unit is identical to the BMW Mk3 unit, so if they have been able to update the Mk3 unit on the BMW there should be no reason why it won't work on the LR unit....

But the V32 software is only available on the Mk4 unit which includes, split screen, moving map, Perspective View, Postcode entry etc, and in my opinion it would be simplier just to fit a Mk4 DVD based unit as it is trully plug and play (as shown on this thread :D)

good post saint.

I did mine a few months back now. Its really simple.

mine didnt come with the v32 software but a simple ebay search and 15 quid got me the upgrade disc as well as the 2013 maps with cameras.

Ive got 2 mk4 dvd units at the moment. I emailed a few breakers yards and found one guy in Manchester that had 2 of them and wanted £100 each. He clearly didn't realise what they were worth so i took advantage and bought both. Ill prob keep one as a spare.

i got one off ebay a few weeks ago for £120 out of a wrecked mini cooper, same unit and as its not been in an l322 or an x5 you can be pretty sure its never had water in it. took 5 mins to change the splash to a nice black and silver range rover vouge one. happy days
