My neighbour has just purchased a 2001 discovery td5.

There was no apparent problems with it and he drive it 100+ miles to get it home without issue.

The next morning it did not want to start and when it finally did, it was spluttering a misfiring

He took me out on a run to see if it improved when warm and it promptly cut out and would not restart.

After a tow home it started again although still misfiring.

Any ideas what is wrong? Previous owner did not mention any issues.

Hi... Previous owner has a receipt in file for a new fuel pump fitted only 6 months ago.

We took the fuel pump out of the tank and all pipes look in good condition with no obvious leaks.

We have fitted a new injector loom and new crush washers on the injectors... It has made no difference.

Was there oil in the red plug end of the harness. If so, did you remove the ECU and dry that out as best you could??

check the crank sensor's plug to not be ingressed... is the fuel filter new? ... FPR not leaking?.... and so on , you really need to put it on a tester...this kind of "in blind" diagnose can be laborious and feckless

Diagnostic machine revealed no faults

New fuel filter fitted, no difference.

Will check crank sensor plug

if no faults logged it's fuel delivery issue... not the return valve, the air bleed valve in the rear outer connection is important... but if it's this one things will be improved after a purge sequence... after injector washers/seals replacement it's good to purge it more than 1 time ... if no joy the FPR is suspect or the strainer under it

dont miss the small strainer which is in the head under the FPR, you must discard that o-ring to remove it...and run the purge procedure few times more

Just a quick update... happy ending. It was the regulator.

Either air was getting in, or the diesel leak was causing a lack of pressure. Perhaps both?

Running sweet as a nut now... should be good for a while hopefully with all the common failure parts changed :)
