Best Independent I know in this part of Essex is DS Automotive on the A127 in Leigh on Sea.

No affiliation whatsoever, but they have always been decent and honest with me.

Thanks for your help Dan , I will get in touch with them. Very frustrating keep asking mechanics but they don't seem interested. Its like I shouldn't be bothered with this old Freelander and just forget it. Gonna keep on trying and get it done. Determined now.

Still ain't got my Freelander looked at, don't seem to be able to find the time. Poor old thing sitting on my drive, covered in dust ,tires going flat, battery going flat. But still interested in doing it up soon, maybe a winter project. Needs the engine sorted as I have said, back window doesn't work, drivers door mirror hanging off, windscreen cracked, rear view mirror on the floor. Apart from that its fine. Get there one day and looking forward to it

Just remembered there was a Freelander Kalahari produced but can't find any information on them. Can anyone tell me the difference or what extras it had

From memory the Kalahari was a similar spec to the ES. So had leather seats and steering wheel. I can't remember if it had seat heating though.

Just had my black smoking Freelander looked at by a so called diesel specialist and he says its nothing to do with the injectors as he took each one out and tested them. He is saying it is a valve stuck that is causing the engine to splutter and pour out black smoke. Any ideas!!!!

EGR valve tested so must be the other thing, could it be a valve stuck as this fella tells me. Haven't got a lot of faith in him as he told me land rover used Honda engine's as well as BMW

The EGR valve can stick open, normally when hot. It's difficult to test, but easy to prove by blocking its vacuum pipe.

Sounds like he's clueless anyway, as no LR ever had a Honda engine fitted. Even Rover stopped using Honda engines in 1994.

Well technically no. You see they did use the L series in the MB Honda Civic saloons and aerodecks but its akin to the old 400 sdi setup over the 45 setup etc, and it's a rare bus here in the UK so that's likely what he's thinking of he has no experience of Rover's but I find thst hard to believe .

The Honda civic did use the Rover L series for a while, but that's different from a LR using a Honda engine. The K series has been confused with a Honda engine by some in the past.

The last Rover to use Honda engines was the Rover 600. I think it ran to the end of production in 1999 with 2L and 2.3L Honda petrol engines. Presumably there was a supply contract to fulfil, as rover had a decent range of there own engines which they could have, and did use in some versions of the 600. Rover never used a Honda diesel engine, although Honda did use a the Rover L series.

Land Rover definitely didn't use any engine from Honda though. Traditionally LR always used there own engines, or engines "borrowed" from the Rover engine stable.

MB civic saloon (6th gen) had the 2.0 L series engine until 2001 when it was replaced as a vehicle outright ;)

Looked up the rover 600 which was made in the 90s and yes as well as the engine in my Freelander the L series 2.0 it also used 3 different Honda engines. But they were all petrol engines
