Hi all

Can anyone point me in the right direction. I have a 90 2.5td with 5th gear problems so now i have decicided to go for the 200tdi convertion. I have bought a disco for a donor car the problem being i cant find anyone who will take the job on to swop the engines.

Does anyone know who may be able to do this for me i live in the midlands.

Hi James, I've had a 200Tdi waiting to fit into my 89 100 for ages and have finally admitted that i dont have the time to DIy so it's booked into Ashley 4x4 in Stafford tomorrow to have it done - they have done this refit before and sound like they know what they are doing.
 
Thanks what sort of money are they charging you for the conversion?

If i do go ahead with it myself with some help does anyone have any usefull tips they would like to share or any links????

Join mud-club.com They have a regular west-midlands fix and repair weekend. where everyone gets together and does that sort of thing. £750 for an engine swap is rip-off money for what is essentially a days work for 2 people.

Paying £750 inc VAT for 3 days work to a highly qualified engineer who can carry out conversions such as this in his sleep, who keeps immaculate premises, has a very long list of happy clients, has all the right tools and who provides a warranty with all of his work certainly isn’t "rip-off money" – especially if you take into account all of the other works he is carrying out.

Before I retired my clients were more than happy to pay me £2,500 for a days IT consultancy, that’s also because I also had a list of happy clients etc – now that was what I would call rip-off money.

2 men in a shed may well be able to swap an engine in 2 days, but would you really trust an amateur spanners work at 80 mph coming down the M6 at 2AM on a cold wet winter’s night?

Peace of mind is expensive these days, so is quality workmanship (but then you do have a habit of disagreeing with everything I say on here)

Having experienced the local stealers hwere, I would probably go for the two men in the shed. You see, they probably REALLY know what they are doing, whereas the ONLY thing the stealers care about is stealing.

I've changed a few engines here in my time, and "two men in a shed" fits the bill perfectly. None of them fell out of the cars yet.

I can see the point that you are trying to make - but .........

You might have (incorrectly) assumed that i had gone to a main dealer - far from it - i'm usinga one man company (and 2 apprenticies) he's got a tiny little workshop, 20 years of experience and enough work to take him up to xmas and i am positive i will get a far better job done by him than a main dealer.

My "two men in a shed" comment was aimed at those who have read a few haynes manuals, seen a few images of engine swops and think they can do a better job (all within 2 days)
 
Sticking a disco block in a 90 isn't a big job and has been done by many succesfully at home.

£750 does seem's about right, when I was going down this route I was given an estimate of £550 plus parts so wouls have been around the same.

Have a search on http://forums.lr4x4.com/ theres a how to on there.

One big cost is the conversion for the exhaust. Steve Parker makes a disco to 90 conversion pipe, not cheap but does the job.
 
750 for a garage isn't bad, especially when Steve Parker charges 300 just for the exhaust adaptor to fit the 200tdi from a disco, is the garage aware of that??? its a pain to weld one from scratch but possible with a couple of hours playing.... hate you to get any additional unexpected costs...

on the other hand I have seen a fair bit of work by an 'EXPERT' Landy company with very qualified mechanics that I wouldnt trust to drive 100 metres... mentioning no names however.... but the name reminds me of walking a vital organ along a sharp hill top :) and they charge a mint IMHO

I did my own conversion and restoration on all my Landys because I only trust my own standards as I am not worried about making a profit and do the jobs at times a little OTT but Im happy with what Im driving knowing Ive done it,

But if your happy with the garage the price isnt that bad if thats start to finish and you then have some comeback...

PS my engine swop took a day... old NA out, TDI out of the donor, in wired running and tested :) ... bloody hard work though and days of fiddling to get it spot on :) plus the donor was a 90 so a little easier..
