Cheers Steve

I can see the point that you are trying to make - but .........

You might have (incorrectly) assumed that i had gone to a main dealer - far from it - i'm usinga one man company (and 2 apprenticies) he's got a tiny little workshop, 20 years of experience and enough work to take him up to xmas and i am positive i will get a far better job done by him than a main dealer.

My "two men in a shed" comment was aimed at those who have read a few haynes manuals, seen a few images of engine swops and think they can do a better job (all within 2 days)

So you had your conversion done by 3 men in a shed then. do you take it to the garage to change a wheel? cos you dont trust "amatuer spanners". a poorly fitted wheel will make you crash! a poorly fitted engine can not fall out! I am 32 and i have over 20 years mechanical experience too and have done this conversion with help from my dad and its probably to a higher standard than a garage would have done! a garage will not fix any other potential future probs they come across..all they will do is stick an engine in!!! IF anyone is considering doing an engine conversion dont be put off by someone who has a Very small toolbox!

a poorly fitted engine may well not physically fall out, but (and this is the point you have missed) its very easy to fit an engine having just read a few forums posts and a Haynes manual, you may well be competent enough to complete the job your self - however i was more than happy to pay someone to do it because:

a: i was finishing a 200tdi install into a lightweight in my garage
b: i didn’t have time to install both
c: i needed my 110 back ASAP as i had a number of trips from Staffordshire to Skye to make

The day after i got the 110 back i drove to Skye and back within 48 and have done the same trip 3 more times since and the installation has been perfect in every respect.

Your rash comment "a garage will not fix any other potential future probs they come across" is just nonsense unless you know how every garage in the country operates.

You appear to think that i have a limited toolbox - yet another rash comment that can safety be ignored methinks.

PS my engine swop took a day... old NA out, TDI out of the donor, in wired running and tested :) ... bloody hard work though and days of fiddling to get it spot on :) plus the donor was a 90 so a little easier..

the above is a very good point, whilst it's easy ish to physically swop engines in a day there is allways an amount of playing around to get everything sorted - one of my main reasons for getting the install done for me was that the day after i got the 110 back i started on a series of trips totalling in excess of 2000 miles and i didnt want to be doing any tweaking.

now i just need to figure out why it sits very happily doing 80Mph all day when i was expecting it to be screaming its nuts off at 70 even with the standard 110 transfer box

Hey, if you know of a garage that does extra stuff without being asked and doesn't try to charge you for the extra work they've done FFS put their name and number up in here!

Speaking from personal experience of a few garages, none of them do extra work for free unless it's already part of the job they're being paid to do (not reusing rusty bolts etc, and even then expect to pay for the new bolt they use). Some, but far and a very long way from most, will tell you it needs doing and offer to do the work, most just do what they've been asked/told to do and take yer cash as quick as they can.

Cheers,

Cheers,

The orginal comment was a over generalisation, and neither I nor mr generalisation said anything about doing extra work for free - however i am yet to find a garage who would not inform you if they spotted something that needed doing, infact it is in their interest to find additional work, and if you think the work needs doing then they have done you a good turn as may not have been aware that it needed doing in the first place.

reusing rusty bolts isnt good practise in any field of engineering and is a sure sign of cost cutting/poor worksmanship - garages like that tend not to be able to mantain the constant flow of work that tends to come from word of mouth recommendation

Nope... you said the above. It's a long way from being unreasonable to infer that you're claiming that all garages inform people of extra work that needs doing, always replace broken parts and never reuse old componenets which, if you were doing the job yourself you would replace out of hand.

Meanwhile... outside of the realms of fantasy... they don't, on the whole. Hey, you might have been unbelievably lucky. The rest of us, on the whole, haven't.

With reference to the small toolbox... I suppose the word 'euphemistic' would be wasted on you ;)

nah it wasn’t wasted, i just didn’t feel inclined to continue the childish banter that mr generalisation ended his two pennies worth with - or was he subtly inferring that he'd seen the blue peter mob do an engine change when he was 12 therefore it must be easy

Tsk tsk... homework for tonight Sean... learn the difference between 'infer' and 'imply'
