You're right, cant remember which ones, if you get the water pump ones and the two that secure the water gallery then it shouldn't leak, only small torque settings if I remember, I wouldn't have thought that the tensile strength of the bolts would be of any consequence

Ive had the timing chest to block gasket leak, that was fun! well actually more time consuming.

Three bolts for water gallety Iirc
If you go right back to the earliest 2.0 diesel engine you will see that also had three bolts in the same place doing the same job.

One 1959 2.0 diesel water coolant three bolt passage, good old land rover dont like to change much:D
Now Im just wondering why I had it in pieces? maybe a coolant leak which is an inside joke if youve ever owned a 2 litre diesel!

After spending nearly all weekend on it, I still can't get the crank shaft bolt undone, I've:
  • put it in gear and had someone on the brake while i used a bar to move the wrench (can go one side of the engine bay to the other)
  • tried a hammer on the bar when I've got it as far as I can
  • tapped the bolt head with a hammer
  • used an impact wrench
  • and reluctantly tried the starter motor approach numerous times and it still won't shift.
  • Used copious amounts of WD40
and am running out of idea's.
Any advice gratefully received

Before now I have had to drop the sump and place a carefully located block of hard wood between the crank and the block to lock the crank solid, then use a very long length of pipe on a breaker bar to break the pulley bolt free. Just choose where you put the block of wood carefully as you don't want to crack your block.
This system has yet to fail me.

Any garages nearby who would come and undo it with a cordless nut gun for a drink?

Hours and hours I spent trying to get the crank nut off. Got a friend round with an impact gun, first go off it came :) :) :) .

catch 22
I need to sell the landie so I can afford to buy the proper tools to fix her. :)

The Dewalt 1/2 cordless impact gun is now doing the rounds at 250 quid with charger and 2 batteries.
Guy at work bought one I had a quick play and it seemed as good as my Milwaukee, long term not so sure but have read good things about them.

Worked as 1st Engineer on a ship, began to notice that we couldn't get man holes open that had only been opened a few weeks earlier, eventually discovered the guys were using their new cordless impact guns to tighten everything, result nothing would come undone without the same gun and sometimes not even then!

Milwaukee are the shiznit. I got a mate with lots of different ones he uses professionally, I love using them.

Ive got three and have to say been bloody good, the 1/2 one is about 6 odd years old and will still undo a truck wheel nut, which has always been my benchmark on how good a 1/2 impact air or cordless is.

Thats where the skill in using power tools comes into play.

my torque wrench is in foot - pounds can anyone tell me if I've converted these right
21.7nm =16
45nm = 33
25nm = 18
and 350 nm = 258
thanks

nearly done, new timing belt is on and the covers are back on, just need to "find" / borrow a torque wrench that goes to 350nm as mine doesn't :(
Then I can put the radiator etc etc back on

The Crank pulley bolt, but borrowed a torque wrench and did it last night (in the amongst the thousands of midges and drizzle) , so just got to put everything back that I took off to get at it now. This could be the longest timing belt change in history, the book says about 4hrs :)

I wouldn’t worry mine started as a timing belt then ended up as a engine swap and rebuild :eek: took about 6 months on and off :oops:

Well that's it back together, and it runs, took it out for a spin on Saturday.
Now that's done, time to make a list of what needs doing, might be a long list !!

Old land rover snag lists never get any shorter, no matter how many jobs you do, more keep getting added to the bottom:D

I had this issue with every land rover I have ever owned until I bought the D3 and now I just service it like normal people do with normal cars!
