Now, I have seen this.......

Will be getting one soon....LOL. will rebuild it first tho.

Cheers
I reckon the rebuild is important. My 300Tdi had about 170K on it when it went belly up. I'm hoping the rebuild has got it reasonably close to it's original capacity of 111hp. So hopefully I've achieved the equivalent of putting a boost pin and a boost ring in an old engine. Mind you, the ring and pin are a hell of a lot cheaper :D

Not an engine rebuild :p:p, just got to put the tub and all the accompanying stuff back on it. Am not touching the engine.

Although I did adjust the wastegate rod ( 1.5 turns increase in length )and reduced the turbo pressure from 19.5 ish to 17.5 ish PSI, so need to do another adjustment.

Cheers

Ahh, I see  You've already got the pin and ring in though, so you just thinking of joining it all up with a little more accuracy with that controller :)

Will have a chat with Neil from fourby at Billing and see what the crack is, may be interesting to see if it will do much once the wastegate pressure is set using a gauge. Amazing the difference a working wastegate and actuator make to the driving though...LOL..Strange that..:p

Cheers

I can imagine. The first reconditioned turbo on my engine rebuild was iffy (or so I suspected) when I swapped it the difference was great. :)

I'm here, fire at me if you want questions answered...

What exactly does the new boost controller do Neil?

Also, as a man in the know ( No liability assumed ....LOL), what would be your recommended max boost pressure on a 300tdi, pinned and fourby ringed? also fitted with an EGT for safety ( max limit is 650C ).

Cheers

Hi guys, just touched down from a very hot and sticky Malvern LR show... so sorry for the late reply..

The boost controller is a manual inline pressure regulator, it overrides the stock waste gate actuation pressure and allows you to dial in whatever boost pressure you want... it will take it right up to 30psi if you wanted, but I would not recommend going that high. Now you could get the same effect by messing with the actuator rod threads, but on a 300 that would be a big faf as they are well tucked away and would involve removing and replacing the entire manifold while you try and find that 'sweet' spot. The boost controller, basically puts a remote control to it and allows you to dial in just enough to match your other mods as part of an overall tuning scheme. Personally I am measuring 1.4 Bar on my in car gauge which is about 20psi, but I have heard of some running higher boost pressures with no detrimental effect.

I would personally be right on top of my oil changes now as the turbo bushings need a film of oil to work and dirty oil here along with an increase in boost will exaggerate any wear in the turbo... and we've all seen films of a runaway diesel

In terms of EGT, 650deg is a good figure to call your danger zone, although I have had mine right up and clipped 800deg for a split second, I dont recommend doing that, and i was pushing as hard as it would go and actually trying to break something....

For those who don't have a guage, EGT's go north very quickly under heavy load, so foot flat to the mat, up steep long inclines will start to impact your EGT's, the good news is they come down as quick as they rise, so generally when climbing hills in the UK once over the crest they will return very quickly, all this happens generally without a flicker to your 'normal' engine temp gauge.

Hope this helps, fire at me if you need to... I'll be happy to help where I can

I’ve recently bought a fourby pin, ring and egt gauge, my 110 300TDI went well before but smoked a lot at high rev’s, when I fitted the pin the original had not been turned so I assumed that it just had a tweaked fuel screw, after fitting just the pin I had no power until the turbo boost cut in, it was so bad I found it difficult to pull away with a trailer behind without revving it up, I then fitted a boost ring, it’s now slightly better, but to get it better it smokes a little on full power, is there anyway to overcome the lack of power when pulling away, until its hot it’s dreadful, I only had one spring and one washer when I changed the pin.
TIA

Fitted boost ring to mine today (thanks fourby) torx bolts were a right pain but I found a torx bit with a 10mm spanner over it fitted well in the space. Mine had no shims in the cap (bolts looked to have never been out before so hope this is OK?) and 2 springs, definitely didn't drop shims as cap and springs came out as one. I put the 3 new shims into the cap followed by both springs and I then wrapped a small cable tie in through both springs and around the cap, made it much easier to fit back into the pump, once I'd started the bolts I snipped cable tie and pulled it through and out before tightening the bolts . Feels stronger already and I have the pin to fit yet.

Boost pin fitted this morning, staggering difference in power. Bit of smoke under foot to the floor acceleration but at all other times its spot on.

It clearly pays to come on Landyzone more often than I do. I decided to look at the tuning of my 90 200 tdi, something I did a few years ago with my Disco 1. Then I read about these boost rings and boost pins. Hmmm!! Thinks I, this sounds like a good option, as I do not as yet have a egt or boost gauge (don't even know how to fit them) so these boost options seem a good bet. So, does one buy and fit the pin or the ring or do they compliment each other? At under £100 for the pair, compared to other tuning costs, it seems a no brainer. Or am I wrong?

The pin seems to most straight forward to start with. They are not actually a million miles from me, so my just drop in and discuss. Using the 90 everyday at the moment, so a few more horses would be nice.
