This one had me stumped for a bit! Injection pump just started rattling/knocking and I started losing power, so I made my way home sharpish and set about finding the problem. First thing I thought was air getting into the system somewhere. So I spent ages checking fuel lines from tank sender, all the way to the injectors. I established that there wasn't any air getting into the system, so then I thought my injection pump was knackered. Not a good situation when I use this motor every day and rely on it to get to work, especially when I'm too skint to buy another pump, second hand or recon. What was odd, was that when I cracked the bleed screw on the filter housing, the rattling stopped and the engine picked up until it then started to die. At which point, I'd do the screw back up and then then knocking/rattling would return. (see video)

I then set about checking all the unions, banjo connections, etc, in the fuel line and, as a last ditch attempt at curing the problem before resigning myself to not having a motor for a while, I half heartedly checked the gause filter in the Delphi lift pump that I fitted last month. It was caked full of crap! I have recently started running on bio diesel and I'm obviously still dragging all the crap out of my fuel system. Cleaned the gauze filter and BINGO! Silent running injection pump again and the motor is running great :)

I'm well relieved that that's all it was, but it did strike me daft idea to fit a tiny gauze filter in the lift pump before the actual fuel filter.

i have that exact noise coming from my injector pump, it comes and goes, but never loses power.

It's a horrible noise isn't it. I was under the impression it was air in the system that made the pump sound like that, but fuel starvation obviously does it as we'll. anything that prevents it from pumping properly, I suppose?

yeah the noise is really pi**ing me off , its so loud, i thought it was a broken valve cap at first,

Heh, cheers for that. Mine's been tapping for a while, nowhere as loud as that mind .. thought it was a lost stud on the exhaust manifold 'cos it sounds exactly like it did when I lost a stud a few years ago .. think I need to check this now .. bit easier to fix if it is this .. ;)

Because it stopped knocking and revs picked up when I undid the bleed screw, I thought there must be a fuel blockage somewhere causing a vacuum and that letting air in was allowing the pump to work easier until the revs started to drop through too much air. I must admit, I didn't think of checking that little gauze filter earlier because the pump has only been on there a month. Just goes to show how quickly and easy they become clogged. I still think its a strange idea putting such a small filter before the main fuel filter.

The Delphi ones do, but I'm not sure about the others. At least with the Delphi you can take the top off and clean it out.

On the Delphi pump there is a screw on top which you undo, then the top of the pump comes off and a small round gauze filter is in there. It just lifts out.
