Hi Guys,
2001 BMW diesel which I parked up last night with no problems. Came out this afternoon opened up ok with fob and no warning lights on dash. Glow light went out ok but engine turned over without firing and batt eventually went flat. Tried to jump it of wifes car but no joy. Had no problems at all with starting beforehand so a bit baffled.
Any help or advice gratefully received.

hi it is a commen fault with this engine i have had this problem since i had mine but only when the engine is hot ,turns over for ages then just kicks in like the fuel management system has a proberlem but wait untill other readers have ansered a few tips befor you get going to any garage they have a devise on ebay for hot starting but i,m told this can mess the running up of the engine if it has been chipped.best thing is get the battery charged right up again then see how long it takes to kick in.i was in tescos in rugby warwickshire when mine would not start and tesco has a policy that if your car wont start in there car park they will in most stores get an AA/RAC van out for you at there cost to get you going you have to go to costomer service and they sort it as they dont want cars cluttering up there parking spaces. anyway why i told you this bit is because when the patrol man came out he checked over the chargibg system and battery and it tuned out the alternator was not charging enought to keep the battery up if you had lights wipers etc on so i put a new alternator on it still dont want to go straite away unless it is cols but it keeps the engine turning untill it does want to come to life.
ps was there plenty of fuel in it as when it is low and leaning forward it dont get down the fuel line it just runs to the other end this is why they put the fuel line out of the rear end of the tank so it dont cut out on you if you was running low and going up a hill.

I used to have a 2.5 diesel. I found it wouldn't start if the tank was below a quarter. Turned out to be the intank pump of course. Above a quarter, there was enough level for the engine pump to pull it through. Just a thought failing all else.

it may need a ecu re-learn done by a autoeletrician .seems to be very common at the moment.make sure your rf receiver is not picking up stray signals which seem to be upsetting the immobiliser system.check out some other threads about this.(i had hair before mine start doing this)
hope this helps

Update time,
Had breakdown company out who reckons it's a fuel problem. Squirted easy start into air intake and engine almost kicked so don't think it's a code problem. Didn't want to go over the top with easy start for obvious addiction reasons. Fuel gauge is on quarter. Battery now on trickle charge for the day with car on it's knees and looking sorry for itself. Any suggestions before expensive auto electrician is called in.

i'm not to sure but easystart would try and fire purely because you are squirting it into the air intake and by-passing the fuel pump but this sounds a bit drastic.
it should cost 50-80 quid to have a diagnostic done depending on how far he would have to come, it took mine five minutes to sort and has been running fine since(s--t shouldn't have said that).it may not be the same problem but when you read on here there seems to be a lot of this happening.it drives you mad because everything works as it should but it just will not fire.
cheers

the easy start will fire if you send it down the air intake, the problem is the re learn for the security system trust the people on here, dont go asking theyre advice then saying 'no i know better' if there was a cheaper more convenient way then it would be well documented on here. if however you have found an easier more conventient way please let us know!

Auto electrician coming out in the morning, he seems to think poor battery performance and will check full diagnostics. Night before non start was a short half mile trip with lights/glow plugs etc on. Easy start was breakdown guys idea so I was bowled a googlie. Any ideas that it could be rf receiver problem thrown into the mix.

Its not a hot start problem, he had it parked up for some time before he came back to start it, so the engine would have cooled down a lot by then, enough anyway for it not to be a hot start problem

I have had the exact same problem, it needs a security relearn, check my other posts for what I check and what I did to get it started

If you are in the east London/essex area I have a number for someone who can do it for you

I,m hoping that when auto electrician does his bit it will be the relearn. Whether it has happened because of a weak battery that needs replacing or the rf receiver needing upgrading time will tell. If it is the rf I read that the wire can be shortened, any comments???

the problem with the rf receiver is it picks up stray signals from mobile phones,wi-fi broadband etc there is an uprated box from l/r(150quid) but i cut my aerial wire(single blue) down to approx 3" this disconnects it from the window but still give it enough signal for the keyfob to work.the main problem is through the night the becm keeps waking up.this is due to the stray signals.each time it wakes up it drains a bit more battery power eventually flattening it.wether or not this is linked to the ecu code going bonkers i don't 100% know but it seems to have worked for me.you will find the rf receiver box under the rear shelf(drivers side)there are two black boxes you want the front one with the blue wire that go's to the window.
hope this helps

UPDATE
The RR Electrics guy came and did the diagnostics and re-synced the BeCM to the ECU. Started first time with the aid of a power pack.
I've fitted new RF Receiver YWY500170 (150 quid)to hopefully rectify, so fingers crossed.

hi fuel ran out in freelander, put diesal into her.wont start yet the batt is fine help

think you want to be in the freelander forum, but as far as i know, when you run out of fuel in a diesel you need to bleed the system. you can also kill the pump (and possibly other things) as it needs to be well lubricated, so stop trying to start it until its been bled. dont hold me to any of this tho, i've never owned a diesel. this is just what i've heard.

Frostydub is right, if you run out of fuel on a diesel it will need the system bleeding. I don't know the Freelander but on some cars it can be a right bar steward to get all the air out.
