Hi there have had a look around the site before posting this. I have a 1998 dse p38. When I move gear from P to D the engine stalls however if I give it a slight amount of revs before selecting D it doesnt stall. I had it to garage where the fuel filter was replaced and the fuel line checked which was all clear. the air filters were also fine. Has anyone any suggestions please. Thanks in advance.

Usually a problem with the quantity control servo. Diagnostics may tell you more. What is the idle RPM?

Thanks Wammers. Been on a diagnostics and no faults coming up. Idling at about 800. The problem has gradually got worse when selecting D it started by only threatening to stall but now its a complete stall on selection.

Is the EGR valve sticking open. What diag has it been on?

I believe it was rovacom. No fault came up to say it was an egr valve. Had a look around and you are able to take it off and clean it arent you?

You won't get a fault if the EGR valve is sticking open. When the throttle pot is below 9% the idle switch is engaged. When a load is applied to the engine the RPM drop is detected by the ECU via the CPS and the ECU increases fuel to compensate via the quantity control solenoid. Interpretation of live data may give a clue if one of the sensor readings is not as it should be. Fuel temp sensor, ECU temp sensor timing modulation. Will all effect the idle fuelling which is a pretty critical setting. I had this on and off for a long time, it gradually got worse stalling at lights and when coming to a halt, it was only cured by a new injection pump. But that does not mean that would always be the case. There are things to look at first. You need a diesel specialist to look at it. Not an average Joe in the local garage.

Oh u old fossils ganging up on me now eh

Well when you get to are age someone has to look after us. See you do Velour repairs, think Tony has a pair of trousers in need of a bit of stitching if you have your thimble handy. Unless you can run him up a new pair.:D:D:D

My Rangie was doing exactly that a while back.
It did seem to clear up, but a few things were going on at the time.
The brake pump burned out and the crank pulley damper failed along with the belt tensioner.

I presumed one of these cured it.
However it's doing it again now.
The first time I also ran a can of STP injector cleaner through it.

I actually think now that's what cured it.
I have just put a can in again now to see if it cures it this time.
I'll let you know, will take a few days to use up the tank.
