Hi all,

My Lightweight intermittently goes from running great with smooth full power to a rasping farting sound under power. Little black smoke when this occurs and seems to be running on 3 cylinders.

Sometimes a wiggle of points/leads/coil electrics will résolve but not always.

I felt a pulse of charge once when I wiggles the coil plugs so rotated it as it felt like it was shorting through body. It’s bolted near top of rocker cover.

She’s got electronic ignition fitted last summer. I’ve ordered new points, plugs and cap, can put a new coil in too if needed.

Just like to fault find the real issue for sanity. Any advice on where to start diagnosis?

Not sure yet. Kinda wished I’d not changed it :) was fine before!

Coil looks old, think it’s original one I got when I bought her. Thanks, I’ve ordered new plugs and points and condenser but I’ll start with coil and check from there before swapping it all out.

I must say, after changing my old points and condenser for an electronic ignition module, I wouldn't go back to points. As previously said, Change the coil for one suitable for the electronic module and change the leads. Look at the contacts in the distributor cap, if they look worn, change that too.

Check with the supplier/manufacturer of the electronic dizzy parts, not all aftermarket electronics need a specific electronic coil. My replacement from Simon BBC(?) didn't because I asked them this very question. And it runs fine.

Yeah, but the coil he has on might be dodgy, especially if he got a whack from it whilst jiggling it about.

Hey guys, little update...

Tonight I took dizzy cap off, it’s new from when electronic ignition was fitted. Dizzy jiggles a bit and so does rotor shaft but not excessively I’d say.

Took vacuum line off and it was perished on collar that fits to carb, so tapped it up but wasn’t that. Still ran rough.

Then while running I took each plug lead out. First plug lead didn’t even click but after few wiggles she started clicking so I put it back on. Did this to each plug and it ran smooth and fine. Took her for a spin but after an hour (bumpy off road track) started rasping again! Repeated the plug trick but didn’t fix it so limped home.

Had a few jolts while pulling points but nothing worse than an electric fence, prob weaker to be fair.

So I’m thinking points or coil?

replace the parts previously listed especially leads but you should change ignition parts as a set

So youv'e gone back to points ditched module and youv'e got new plugs\leads\cap\rotor but not cool?...

Ok thanks! Should have new cap, leads and sparks this week and I have a new coil in shed.

What’s the issue/reason for different coil for electronic pickup? I think my electronic ignition set was accuspark

No all I’ve done is tape up perished vacuum line collar and wiggled points to get a temp fix which then stopped working later. I’m waiting on the parts.

I plan to change points, plugs and cap and then maybe coil but keep electronic ignition and rotor etc. Sound like a good plan?

and condenser, its best to change all the parts,as faar as i can see accuspark use a std non ballast coil so aslong as its a good one
