Hi all, I am currently working on a 2.25 LR diesel (N/A) that's been put into a series 2a. Putting it bluntly, Im struggling to get it working nicely using both the haynes and the official LR workshop manual. The gutting thing is, in our workshop the combined experience has built tens of these engines from scratch and we just cant get this one working right.
so the issues:
Essentially, she sounds like a rough tractor. we have the front panel off the LR for better access, water pump, radiator etc all removed. it was initially thought to be a timing issue. So injector pump came off, oil filter off and the drive gear for the Injector Pump was incorrect. Reset this and it still sounds awful and doesnt start nicely. We then figured it must be the cam chain timing, lo and behold this was wrong too (no damaged suspected to valves, stems or pistons). Resetting everything as per the workshop manual the engine still isn't happy. from research the engine has the incorrect flywheel housing on it and the flywheel has no EP mark, however it does have the slot in it which we believe the screw through the side of the flywheel housing bolts to in order to lock the camshaft for timing relative to the crankshaft.
So this was set, No. 1 exhaust valve fully open, camchain back on etc and rebuild. Then turn the engine to 13 degrees BTDC (12J engine and the flywheel only has 13 / 14 BTDC markings so set to 13 degrees according to haynes) and then turn injector pump drive gear to 20 degrees below the horizontal. This all sorted and rebuild etc... (of course a few other steps in between but this is the bulk of the timing procedure as far as we are aware).
Have I got something badly wrong??? the engine doesn't start happily (although she does go) and she sounds like a tractor when running. WTF is going on?? how can i get this running sweet?
any advice appreciated at this point as the workshop has sent enough time on it to justify a full engine out and rebuild at this point, we cant keep wasting time!
