My mates just bought a series 3 on E bay and yes the joys of owning a land rover have started. In fact he drove 2hrs to pick it up with his misses and got 2 miles from the blokes house and broke down,(which didnt help )she thought it was "A piece of sh** " directly they looked at it.
So now the AA have got him home he's called on me any pointers would be great.
We got it started. It runs and drives but then seems to run out of fuel.
Taken stop solnoid inners out to elliminate that.
Fuel lift pump seems to work but not sure how good.
Looking at changing fuel filter + lift pump.
Any advice would be welcomed please help this man from being told "I TOLD YOU SO" from the misses.

Are you sure it's a Land Rover engine, because the 2 1/4 Diesel doesn't have a stop solenoid, it has a stop cable. No electrics to the fuel system apart from heater plugs.
I'd look at maybe water in the fuel, check Diesel Filter, then bleed system through so no air locks. Once a Diesel is running it takes a lot to stop it.

the tings i'd do in the order i would do them,

1 have a quick drinky#
2 check the fuel for water
3 replace the fuel filter they cost about £2 from a motor factor never hurts to have a fresh filter i think i have a spare in my garage 'just in case'
4 check the tank is venting i have seen lift pumps crush fuel filters but it cant hurt to check
5 remove the lift pump and check for wear and movement its not known for these to sieze up if left for a while without running
6 put it back together and go to the chipshop
7 arrive home with chips, eat chips and have another little drinkey and let the world know the results of the nights exploits

# jack daniels is the drink of choice

Interesting, it must be 2.5 na then but the air filter is in a different possition to mine its bolted directly to the top of the manifold where mine has a tube and seperate filter (oil bath type) his is a pan type thats wot threw me. (mines a 2.5na)

no probs mate let us know how you get on, if that doesn't fix it (i suspect it is either the lift pump or the filter although i have seen metal fuel lines corrode internaly and block themselves with a 'flap' of rust before

Probably from a Sherpa or a taxi. Does it have a cam belt ir chain?
Is the injector pump in the same place as yours?
Better still, post a piccy, and/or the prefix of the engine number

injector pump in same place. Will try to post piccy or get engine number from him .Think i might have my head under this one for a while till its had its creases ironed out.:)

Yeah, sounds like a 2.5 rather than a 2 1/4, not that it makes much difference to this problem.
Is it sucking air in somewhere?

Yes you were right it was a taxi engine as i had to match the air filter at the parts shop.Changed the fuel filter and the bottom was full with big clumps of sh# dirt . It was leaking fuel from the leak off union. Changed the stop switch as well .After playing with other bits after work he drove into the sun set.
Don't know if he made it home thou!! Sure something else will crop up.Thanks for everyones advice.

Well done, a nice bit of lateral thinking.
When your mate comes to change the timing belt, it is different to the Land Rover one. If he is contemplating serious off roading, he should be aware that the front cover isn't sealed, so should be careful of deep wading.

My mate made it to work this morning started first time. Ran like a dream, sort brakes next then its over to him to start learning mechanics .God knows he'll need it owning a series.

I would rely on the log book mine says 2 1/4 petrol when its a 2.5 diesel i hav'nt got round to changing the v5
