Hello everyone
After scouring this universe I'm still stumped and I'm asking for your help .
I'm a biker always have been but decided to pass my driving test at 34years young and bought myself a Freelander 1 auto 2.0 td4 for commuting and taking my kids out etc

I had it about 3 days when the problem first started , so here goes

It'll start up lovely very responsive and smooth drives lovely , then after about 15 minutes as it's set in drive
It will begin to almost act like it's in neutral you have to kick down the accelerator which will rev and rev and the it'll kick back in at this point the temp is about half way on the gauge don't know if it's related or not but just something I noticed but I've had it twice where I've had to pull up at the road side as the FL has just not kicked back into drive even when turned off and back in it just revs ,

Weirdly reverse always works
I've had a little red led light appear on the rev counter.

Could it be a lack of transmission fluid ??
as I say any help at all would be truly appreciated as I've been truly taken advantage of by the dealer I bought it from

Thanks guys

Welcome:).

How long have you had it now, I would be taking it back to the dealer.

Literally a week , although another concern is that this dealer doesn't actually exist , it's been a big con from start to finish so now I'm stuck with a problem car and no way of contacting anyone
I'm truly stumped as it initially drives so nicely , probably the nicest drive I've had!

Sounds like 2/4 Brake Duty Solenoid failure, or it could need a good auto box fluid change, read this link below.
The 75 and ZT Owners Club Forums - View Single Post - Harsh automatic gearbox changes - Failed 2/4 Duty Solenoid (the75andztclub.co.uk)

And this thread if it's just the fluid, the Rover 75 M47 as the same engine.

Hopefully Nodge will jump onto the thread as he as had an auto

Thank you for the reply mate I'll check that out

If it does this issue in 3rd gear, it could be the piston in the gearbox that has cracked and is leaking. This issue normally manifests itself when the gearbox has heated up.
Thanks for the info buddy , does that mean new gearbox territory then if it turns out to be that ?

So upon further inspection my atf looked like pepsi as apposed to cherry ade so that's been changed. However it was low I believe so I soon found out why this little 14mm bolt , the thread has gone inside the box , long shot but as I was loosing fluid I never checked if it was an 8mm BSP thread as I've got a Heli coil kit I can repair it with hoping someone could shed some light on it for me
Thanks guys

I've never heard of the level plug stripping out.
Are you sure you removed the correct bolt?

That is a different bolt to all the ones I have seen but it looks like the level plug position.
Having spent too much of my life lying underneath auto boxes recently!!

Has replenishing the fluid solved the problem?? It will be temporary if leaking but will be a good result if it does.

Usually this is a 5mm Allen bolt.

If you can rethread without getting swarf in the box then it is worth a go.

I haven't taken it out on a proper run yet only a short one to get things moving which is where I discovered someone had stripped the inner thread it did however respond very well and seemed to not rev as high before switching gear , it didn't seem to be such a struggle so fingers crossed if I can get this level plug business fixed we're all good
I'll provide an update once complete
Also I've discovered it definitely the level plug bolt as the later models have a 14mm hex bolt instead of the 5mm one , confusing but a bit of a sigh of relief
