So this is my first venture into the world of Range Rovers so please bear with me! I picked the 2002 Vogue (with a later facelift) up from London where its spent the last few years and drove it 160 miles north to Lincolnshire. To be fair it made it all the way home with minimal fuss. I was making mental notes of the things i noticed that need sorting and the list goes:

i) Oils and filters
ii) Definitely needs an Aircon re-gas
iii) The info strip below the speedo and rev is really pixelated so i cannot read any faults on it
iv) Hook up to diagnostic re above to see what's hiding in the system
v) I noticed a very slight slipping of gears (reminiscent of clutch slip) happened one or twice
vi) sounded like a slight groan/moan from the L/H side a couple of times, bearings maybe?
vii) Cruise control didn't work or i didn't know how to activate? button on steering wheel pressed but nowt
viii) will put into Land Rover to sit through a proper service (see i))

I have wing mirror glass replacement on both sides on order and a bonnet cable to replace, also on order

Then its just a case of getting used to the size of it :) If anyone has any ideas/help for the above list of things then I would love the benefit of your experience.

Better to check with diagnostics BEFORE buying.
Aircon may need more than a re-gas, condenser failure is not unknown.
If it's a diesel, the gearboxes have a life expectancy of not much more than 80K miles.
There is no guarantee that a stealer will actually do a good service.

Thank you for the kind welcome, yes it was very much an impulse buy with a view to it being a project as any 22 year old vehicle purchase is. I think the thought of it sitting there in London not being used for the last 6 months (no tax) with a chance it could have been crushed just forced a heart over head decision.

It is a petrol v8 at 114k miles. Like i say i was pleasantly surprised at the stress free drive home. It never sounded laboured and pulled nicely when needed on the A1. If i hear of a more reputable mechanic for RR/LR in the Lincs area then i will be more than happy to put work their way. Appreciate the info on the aircon, not sure if getting it on a diagnostics will tell me about the condenser? or if its a fault finding exercise?

Is there a preferred diagnostics tool that suits a 2002 RR?
 
Welcome to the pleasure dome, I find every days is a school day when you drive a Land Rover. Enjoy your newly acquired L323 they are a dream when they work but can be a nightmare at times, that said easily the best car I’ve ever driven. Definitely find those local independent Land Rover specialists they’ll save you a fortune.

As it's a petrol, the gearbox should be OK, maybe just needs an oil change & new filter.
For the Aircon, take it to Kwik Fit of the like and have a leak test done.
Not sure on diagnostics for your model & Year, RSW from the USA may cover your year or Blackbox Solutions, there are others, some good some not so good.

If it's petrol RSW's kit should work OK

as yours is a 2002 year bmw inpa software should work its a free down load but you need a cable to run it there are companys on line that will sell you the right cable and soft ware for about £80 and you get tech backup.
all the modules on the early l322`s up to 07 are basically from a bmw x5

Hi and a huge thanks for the information, I'll definitely look into sourcing something along the lines of what you've listed. I'm not sure if the dashboard screen or strip display under the dials gave a huge amount of information as I've just parked it on the drive Sunday and not been able to make time to sit in it and have a 'real' look at it.
