a turbo diesel has higher combustion temps that cracks the pistons ,tdis have intercoolers but lots of carbon is usually an effect of egr

Guessing it's a thin Crown that is to blame?, 19j isn't a favoured engine I gather from reading?

that can be true but equally that could be tomorrow when it blows through the piston leaving you stranded

Absolutely, I have just had a proper look at the photos now I am using the PC and not my phone, that white mark around the crack, to me that looks quite sinister, it may be due to heat caused by combustion gasses blowing through the crack?

Two options, replace the pistons, I would go for AE Federal Mogul pistons from Turner Engineering, I believe others are made by King pistons, for this application I would be fussy. 200 quid will buy four. While I was in there I would do the shells as well and what ever else needed doing. I would then turn my attention to the head.

Dont replace the pistons, dont do anything, it ran right before, take a chance that it might run right for many years or a few days, stick a new HG on it and drive it like I nicked it. Possibly source another 19J and rebuild it when time and money allowed and keep it as a spare. Keep it maintained, 15w40 mineral oil, new filters, the usual drill.

Obviously funds would dictate my decisions but I would aim for the first option and not worry too much if I had to settle for the latter.

im not sure thats exactly the answer ,but to start with it was just turbo bunged on an 2.5 na then the coated the crowns which helped , but with no intercooler temps can be high, and materials improved with later engines as well as piston design

Its usually over heating thats to blame, early ones didn't fair out too well. They got a bad rep because they are underpowered and slow, they breath a lot when worn causing the air filter to clog up with oil, but if you look after them and dont drive them like its a race car they actually are all right, easy to work on, cheap to buy, parts are easy to get, they are quiet and run smoothly, mine runs like a petrol. Although it is a late one, it has all the revisions that they made during production.

AE was the choice when we used to rebuild loads , bores might be fine but at the time everyone had bore wear as did all red blocks, id happily since head doesnt seem to be cracked spend a few quid and make it well ie bores pistons ,bearings ,valves ettc

You watch now after saying all that it will probably destroy itself on the way to work tomorrow!

Thats what I would do too, its already apart, it wont take much to get the block stripped enough for a rebore. At least then you know its good on the bottom end.

It could also be that on that cracked one the oil jet below the piston isnt working correctly, Id check that.

you strip enough tds and you see the issues ,pistons and bore wear ,tdis rarely bore wear, but a good td is a fine engine and should be rebuilt and id much rather have one than a 200 tdi disco engine bodged in ,even though ive done that quite a few times

Id rather a TD than a Fender 200, they just run so smoothly, granted they couldn't pull your c0ck straight but its a landy and we dont have any motorways round these parts.

425 VM's are quite smooth and got some grunt, don't see them finding their way into a 110's though ;)

Quite simple by design so i don't see why not myself .

Hmm..

compared to the na they were just what a landy needed, though i like those too proper engineering

When my TD came to an end it was puffing like an asmatic dragon.Put a 200tdi in.
I did strip the TD just for a look and was amazed to find two pistons had cracked all the way across and yet it would still go.
Agree that when good it was a smooth runner and quieter in the cab.
I did wonder if anyone fitted one with an intercooler and was there any benefit?

Hahahaha!
We say "wouldn't pull the folds out of grandads foreskin" round here.
