hi there,
been poking arround my landy today. i thought i had a leak from my rear crank oil seal, but i noticed the oil breather pipe from the rocker cover goes to the airbox, and it runs off down to the bell housing. is this normal? there is alot of oil being blown out of my breather pipe so i recon it could also be the source of the crank oil seal leak?

anyone shed some light? think i might try routing that breather elsewhere to see what happnes.

cheers
karl

Mine does the same.
I have disconnected it from the air box as it used to fill my air filter with oil, so now I have connected it to a longer pipe and sent it to the back of me 90 where it chuffs happily away(and spits oil on the rear xmember:lol:)
I am putting a 200tdi in soon yay no more chuffing:lol:

does yours have 2 pipes coming from the filler cap, one to the airbox the other to the bell housing?

Yes I have one coming for bell housing area to the filler then another going to the air box.
The air box one I removed, and extended it to reach the rear of the vehicle.
The leak is is probably down to the pressure forcing the oil out of that join.
If its fouling ya air filter, stick it in the chassis somewhere.
Mines been doing it for ages, keep checking the oil, and she'll go on for ever:D:D
I like the 19j rattly old dog but keeps on going.:D:D

The hose from the filler cap to the air box has been disconnected for years on mine, but I put the hose in a small oil catchment container just incase any oil starts going on the drive.

well i took mine off the airbox and put it in a bit bottle, but it shot off with the pressure and sprayed everywhere! i was wondering if the oil coming from the bottom of the bell housing, could be oil from the breather?

i quite like my 19j too, it is a good old work horse and is suprisingly powerful! i havnt driven one before but was expecting it to be alot less powerful!

I had an issue with the collection bottle not staying where I put it:mad:
So into the chassis it went, till it kept gassing out the cab:mad:
long pipe to rear of the 90 and we are happy bunnies:D:D

Il just try routing them both elsewhere and see if the leak disappears! I recon engine oil is running down into the bell housing.

My engine oil leaks out of the filler cap cause of the breathing, now the rocker gasket is weeping too:(
Another little job for yours truley:rolleyes:

Mine got so bad, I drilled a hole in the rocker cover and connected an elbow and ran a length of hose down the chassis to the rear!

i have just done that gasket! ;-) just trying to stop it dripping on the floor! not arsed about it blowing into the airbox, the prev owner has taken the airfiler out to stop it clogging!

as you are, im planning on a 2/300 in the near future depending on insurance!

I have declared my intention of fitting the 200tdi and told em about the 2" lift and I t didn't change a lot, my new address made it go up:eek:

i bet you are with a specialist insurer tho. i think admiral will tell me to sod off! guna try lancaster or something as il be 21 in august. i wana put a disco tansfer box on too

i need to save up for a disco first!

Found the following which might be of interest

""The problem is caused by a poor seal of the the piston rings. The force of the combustion within the cylinders leaks past the rings and pressurises the crankcase which is obviously containing your oil. This excess air has to go somewhere hence the breather, but it takes oil with it which is why your air filter is covered!""

all red blocks have poor ring /bore contact ,unlike tdis ,they will run forever but ,i have never found one without bore wear even on low milers,so they allways breathe heavy ,but for £300 you can make them like new rebore £100 4x piston rings £100 sundries brgs gaskets £100

Yeh, i knew it would be that. Il put a tdi in when I can afford to, as you say itl run forever how it is so there is no rush! I just wanted to see if I could stop oil dripping from the bellhousing-gearbox join, thought it might be that breather!
