Hi
I have a freelander XEDI with what we think is Fuel injection problems. The local dealers are really cluthcing at straws and asking sill money to diagnose the problem before any repairs!!

The car starts first time but no power (thats if you want to travel everywhere at 2mph!) Anybody any clues what this could be?

We wondered whether this could be an ECU issue. Also does anyone have a fuel system diagram at all please?

Regards
Sarah

We have been exploring it further now we have it at home. The engine revs ok sometimes but then starts to kick out lots of white smoke (we think is unburnt diesel) and like it is misfiring. The person we bought it from had someone who used to work for Land Rover and he seemed to think it could be injector No 1. Any clues?

White smoke, wrong fuel?, turbo/intake?, air filter. Cirtainly isn't no1 injector.

Have you sorted this?

Hi

I havent been on here for ages as you can see! We are still working on this problem. It would appear that there isnt enough fuel being fed through (injection pump we think) but rather than spend a fortune on servicing this or even a new one we were going to fit an external electric pump as we have tried one temporarily and it does resolve the issue. However my husband was wondering if we would be able to fit one of the in tank pumps (although these were fitted to TD4 and ours XEDI).

Would you have any clues on this at all?

Thanks
Sarah

Check the in-line hand primer pump, the internal diaphragm collapses for a past time and causes fuel starvation. Bypass its and see if it cures it.

We did actually have an electric pump attached where the hand primer pump was and it did solve the problem we will try that. Thank you for your help would not have thought of that one.

Hi,
This is an interesting line of thought. My xedi has similar problem to Sarah's. Sometimes it idles and runs as good as new - smooth idle and hardly any exhaust smoke. Other times when the engine is not under load it runs rough, like it's misfiring and lots of white smoke; flat spot and when it's cold is slow to accelerate, almost hesitant. So far I have changed injector No1 - no difference. Changed the diesel pump - a little better. Changed the fuel filter - no change. The in-line primer is interesting. I would never have thought about it. Is i tokay to by-pass the primer pump just to check if it makes a difference? I hope so because I'm baffled right now.

Cheers
Clive

I have heard that the fuel pumps fail on these if you can get your hands on a fuel pressure tester check out the pressure available ,if you are just clagging another pump inline it may be the old/other pump could be restricting flow ,check fault codes there may be a fuel pressure issue there picked up by the pressure sensor if so maybe a replacement pump sorry to say but check for any other blockages or restrictions being the fuel filter has been done ?
