Hi guys and girls im hoping someone can help me, i brought a 1997 disco from a friend ive done shed loads of welding to get it through an mot and now its gone and let me down.

Ill start at the beginning, brought the disco for a project and to assist in a new refurb job ill be doing in france soon, i stripped all the boot floor out and replaced complete boot floor, repaired rear inner arches, replaced rear x member,
repaired outer sills and some other bits. i removed the fuel tank and all the other parts that you need to remove to get the tank out completed all the work and refitted tank. refuelled tank with £30 of diesel and expecting it to be a nightmare to start but no after warming glow plugs for a couple of seconds away she went first turn of key excellent i thought, next i booked her in for an mot at a local garage that i use, driving to the garage that is about five miles away she suddenly looses power no acceleration so i pull over thinking i had run out of fuel tried to start her again and away she went but when i press accelerator there is nothing. iv checked all the usuall things hoses etc and no problems found. i got her recovered and she is currently at the garage but the mechanic cant find what's wrong with her, he says he has dropped the tank to check fuel lines from tank, seems to be dragging his feet abit as she been there 3 days now and still no diagnosis any advice would be appreciated

If it starts and ticks over . But not picking up on throttle . I would take a look at the throttle position sensor . Have you had it read for fault codes ? Also if it's been without fuel I would run the purge routine as in the hand back and check the filters and pump again

edc or manual throttle cable

Can you rev the engine by hand under the bonnet? I'm no expert but I'd expect if it was a fuel problem it wouldn't run/start at all... Good luck anyways!

Replace the lift pump and the fuel filter, then using the hand pump on the lift pump, prime the filter until you diesel out the vent. It's all cheap and easy to do.

Was thinking that myself. Can't believe it was in garage for four days and still not rectified. Then I ask my brother to tow it home for me to have a play. He started it and let it tick over slackened bolt on filter till diesel run out and no more problems.

still keep an eye on the pump ,you often only notice they are poor after letting air into the system , once system is air free injection pump will usually pull enough through but not well enough to deal with air like the lift pump should ,obviously injection pump will run off diesel in filter for a short while

hi again guys, fitted new lift pump and new filter on tuesdayafter a drive out and problem happened again and rac said change lift pump. and all was well yesterday. then this morning after dropping kids off at school the same thing happened again total loss of power but engine still ticks over and i managed to get it home. any help would be great as im at the end of my tether now and ready to sell her as i need a reliable car.

also should the fuel tank be pressureized? (when i remove fuel cap i get lots of air from tank) just released bleed screw on top of fuel filter housing and no fuel came out then engine cut out.

here goes so far. released bleed screw on top of filter housing and manually pump fuel through till fuel comes out of bleed screw. tighten bleed screw and engine starts and runs ok, let it run for about 2 mins and released bleed screw again to check if fuel is getting through. no fuel comes out of bleed screw then i get loads of greyish smoke and deisel smell when accelorate and engine cuts out. gonna drop the tank again and check all fuel lines and tank vent.

Inside the fuel tank.

I have checked everything. Seems when I leave fuel filler cap off it runs ok. I removed fuel tank vent and dismantled and cleaned it there was loads of crap in there I thought it was a rubber seal lol.
Will it make a difference leaving fuel filler cap off. The mrs said won't the fuel evaporate. Obviously she didn't do chemistry at school.
