I have now bought another P38

but got loads of bits
inc a gearbox ecu from an auto BECM, engine ECU

might come in handy on my project

Hope you are keeping all the parts dry...either in the wardrobe or in the pantry !!!

At least nobody can say you don't like P38's lol

Hi and thanks Irishrover, i changed the becm becuase it went into lockout and handheld diagnostics couldnt read it. The becm is from a p38 2.5 diesel the same year as mine (n reg) but from a manuel and mines auto (dont know if theres any differance) friend of a friend who works for a rr specialist looked at it for me and said he synced the becm to the ecu but its hard trying to get him to have another look for me as hes buisy moving house. The new becm is a amr5143 but i cant read the part number off the old becm, theres other numbers readable but not the amr or ywc number. I got the keyfob and o/s/f door handle with the becm but only changed the blade in the key and didnt fit the door lock ( i dont know if my problems stem from this) if you need any more info let me know. Thanks Bertybe.

Keeping the original door lock and changing the key blade into the new fob will work o.k.
The old becm going into lockout can be easily cleared, if you still have it and the old fob.
What concerns me is that you say that the new becm was synched to the engine ecu, can't understand how they did this without changing the EMS code in the new becm to match the engine ecu. You need special software, which Rick and myself have, to get the information from the becm, it's hidden and even the main stealers can't do it with Test Book.
The becm also has to be set to the gearbox type, auto or manual.
Do you still have the old becm ?
I think you have to start from scratch by the looks of things at the moment. It's not disasterous.
I am over in the UK (Walsall) on 4th March for about 6 weeks and will have the kit with me, if you are desperate, you could PM Rick the Pick..he's based near Brighton and he may be able to help out earlier.
I feel that a full becm data check and reprogramme is the way to go.

Hi Irish

might look to hook up with you in march if that is possible, might need some faults clearing on my motor
and checking the spare becm

might have some movement on the project motor by then as well

yeah
and some one offered me a petrol one with a headgasket issue last week

but it was cheap

might start breaking a few for some dosh......

P38 bits r us

Yes ive still got the old becm and fob but it had several faults comming up on the display and the faults kept changing. the guy changed it from manual to auto with his diagnostic machine (logic 4 or something like that) and entered a 4 didget code for the engine ecu on the new becm. The guy is supposed to be having another look for me tommorrow evening and if he cant sort it, it looks like i will be seeing you in Walsall lol. thanks Bertybe

Just visiting relatives and Er Indoors is off to New York for a week so I've got some spare days.
Bertybe..I'll send you a PM shortly

In view of your last post, let us know how you get on tomorrow. I have not PM'd you, I'll wait for your update.

ok no worries n ill deffo let u know n thanks again m8 its really helped me understand them a bit better thanks carl

Just to update you, i had another friend have a look at the rr tonight, (he works for honda) and has the latest bosch diagnostic equipment (12 grands worth) and it came back as an anti theft fault, fault code 11100011 or fault 27 (dont know if this meens anything to you) so it seems like it needs re synching as suggested several times on here. Problem is now is that i dont know the best way forward as im finding it hard to get the original rr mechanic to have a look. Any suggestions would be greatfull. Thanks Bertybe.

The way I see it, the latest diagnostic check confirms that the immobiliser is preventing the car from starting and this is more than likely due to a mismatch in the EMS code, in particular probably caused by the wrong code being stored in the replacement BECM.
