Hi Guys,

Does anyone know if the soundproofing under the bonnet of a 1993 defender is asbestos? Mines in a bad way and I want to remove it. But if it's that nasty stuff I might be a bit more careful.

Cheers guys

Don't think there is any asbestos, but wear a mask anyway as there will be dust and fibres floating about. Looks well ragged and you can then check bonnet structure. Do not have one on mine but if you want to replace kits are available.

It looks like fibreglass to me - so wear a mask if there's a chance of inhaling the dust/particles. I used self adhesive closed cell foam on mine - easy peasy to fit and pretty cheap.

Asbestos was not used, and it was banned well before your defender was built, it does look like fibre glass insulation which you do not want in your lungs, tiny needles of glass in your lungs will not be good for you. Nothing to worry about as long as you wear a mask, keep anyone away while you do it and bag it up.

Cheers for the replies guys.

I'll rip it off this weekend then. I didnt know that repalcements where still available so I'll look into that, or use the closed cell sticky back stuff maybe.

Thanks again.

You can get a replacement for about £50.
