i have a 93 classic 3.9 efi v8 auto, no diff lock model. in my recent pay and play days i have noticed i am losing drive on my front wheels when the going gets tough? how does my 4wd sytstem work and more importantly how can it be improved please help? i have insa turbo's, 2" old man emu lift kit ect but lack of drive makes me look silly sometimes:doh:

What is the "no diff lock model" - are you saying it doesn't have a centre diff lock? If so, that will be why you're front wheels aren't spinning when they have grip but both rears don't.

So you have a Viscious Coupling. Either you are having one front and one rear wheel spinning i.e what we call cross axled or you have a missing Propshaft (typical when some dodgy people sell a RRC with a knackared VC unit or a shaft/cv/drive member gone at the front. IF this is the case then you will only have rear wheel drive (I doubt it you would go nowhere) if one rear wheel looses traction then you would be stuck. If you have a full working 4wd system then its possible to spin a front and rear wheel and get stuck. (the art of driving is to make sure you always have 3 wheels in contact with the ground or grip and you have enough momentum to get to where you want to go).

when you loose drive on the front wheels do you mean they are spinning with no grip or dop you mean they are not rotating at all?
If the fronts are spinning the VC is locked as it should be with little grip available, if they are not rotating at all then the VC is Knackered.

Very rarly the VC does not drive Very rarly 99% its locks up and the OP would not notice this offroad only when on a grippy surface.

I do have a spare transfer box depends where abouts he is IF its knackared but I would suggest the 4wd is working perfectly.

hmmmmm. well to clear up some queations, when im on a incline and loose traction one rear wheel breaks traction (with all four wheels on floor) spins up and thats game over for me, i have to try again then with more right foot lol. some times its fines then other times i cant get up a short incline  so we all agreed the viscous coupling could be to blame? if so where do i find this please as im used to good old "clunk" diff lock on and away you go.

IF its this I have a transfer box you can have for £85. But Check first that you have not got a broken front shaft. Are you sure its only one rear wheel spinning? or is it at all possible one front is also spinning?

From what you say sounds like you have no front propshaft and or a broken shaft/cv IF you are certain that none of the front wheels are spinning aswell as the rear one

it has a front prop shaft jai, i am a mechanic by trade but this viscous coupling is new to me and my lads. to be honest i am not entirly sure non of the front wheels are spinning either but this morning at my local pay and play track, i got swamped in a little boggy section so selected reverve, gave it some whelly and just the n.s.r wheel span and DEFINATLY no other wheels even twitching.

ashcrofts do em along with the usual landy parts places like paddocks and dingo croft

If your 100% sure only one rear wheel was spinning its gotta be either front shaft CV joint drive member diff. VC usually like 99% seize up 1% lose drive to an axle in fact I've heared of it only once and I doubt that because the guy was anumpty. Check shafts CV joints diff. To make the VC lock up the differential is very small front to back.

If your a mechanic I take it you work on cars and not Landys sorry it just sounded like a noob question. there is nothing special about VC fitted to many vehicles

What is common is them seizing and then the splines wear massivly on the output flange of the transfer boxes as transmission wind up occours. This is common
