Well in that case i stick to my first answers then, sort kickdown cable or look at governor. Don't think there is a lot else to say.

It could be torque lock. I just find it a lot less relaxing to drive compared with my old RR. It would go into top at 50mph. This one is doing nearly 2000rpm at 50mph and doesn't change up (or torque lock) until about 2400rpm. Seem to have to work the engine a lot harder for every gear. Could it be that my old one was hydraulically controlled and this one is electronic?

Pre '88 they went into 4th/lock-up @ 40mph, even more relaxing (& economical) for the country lanes around here:cool: Your 'box is hydraulic, electro's on the P38 models.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I checked the oil level when cold this morning. It is reading about 2 inches above the maximum mark!!

I will drop a few litres out of it on the weekend - and won't use it in the meantime. Thankfully I haven't used it much, hope the previous owner hadn't run it for too long like this.

Is this likely to have any bearing on the late changing issue?

That will be about a pint and half too much if that, don't think it will be litres you have to drain.

Did you check with the box in Park and the engine idling? It's very important to do this to get the levels right.

Pete

Unlike the engine oil it's vital that the car is on dead level ground. The slightest tilt, either fore-aft or sideways, will result in an inaccurate reading.

Finally got around to changing the oil and filter. It has improved it slightly and the box generally feels more positive but it still changes up a lot later than I would expect. I had a look at the kick down cable and it all looked good and seemed to be working as expected.

I mentioned the problem to a local mechanic, he suggested trying the Lucas autobox additive, is this a good idea?

have you been to a proper autobox specialist , i worked for an independent 4x4 dealer , we ALWAYS sent them away for repair . If you don't know what your doing it's so easy to fook them up !!

ive worked for them places you send them too i rebuild them and adjusting kick down either way a bit wont hurt

I did try tightening the kickdown cable, it seemed to make the changes occur even later. I then adjusted it back to about 1 mm from the cable stop.

sometimes adjusting cable can suit your driving style ,but it sounds either low on pressure or sticky govenor

I had the gearbox oil and filter changed almost as soon as I bought my P38 diesel and it made a huge difference. Smoother changes at all revs/speeds. Well worth doing I would say even if you still have to adjust the kick down.

Right, I finally got around to pulling the transfer box off the gearbox and have stripped the governor off.

The first thing to note was the ATF in the transfer box was black. Am I right in thinking the transfer box and main gearbox are an open system and share the same ATF? I have changed the main gearbox ATF a few times and it is very clean compared with the transfer box. Is this a sign that something is blocked?

The governor was clean and the three rubber o-ring seals on the output shaft were in good condition, however, inside the governor where the three o-rings run it is quite badly scored/pitted. I think it will be allowing fluid to pass past the o-rings. Is this likely to be causing the late changing issues?

Thanks in advance guys.

not common oil even though they both use atf ,t/box never serviced in a good while is a pity ,there not o rings but square section ,govenor shouldnt be scored although you may see marks ,feel if its is scored it needs changing

Do you know a good place to buy the relevant parts?

Another thing that I have noticed is the output shaft from the gearbox has quite a bit of lateral play. It is tight in the seal but can be moved slightly in all directions, is this normal?
