....Can't seem to find it!

Anyone have any clues, I am going to go and have another look, just finished putting it all together and now just need to fill with oil....

Is this it??

As it is the only one and is not as high up as I would expect.

Cheers Neilly, but my swivel housing is not like that one....even my old version of the 1987-91 manual doesnt show the housing I have.

I dont have a drain plug and what presume to be the fill plug is about half up the housing.

Undone with with a 7/16 spanner on the square drive and cilling through there at the moment as any thing is better than nothing until we can fathom this one out!

Thanks for the replies chaps, I filled through the plug that would appear to be the filler/level plug.

Considering there is only 3 year between my 1988 110 and the girlfriends 1991 Defender 110 (it is a proper Defender btw) the swivel housings are differnt as hers has an obvious fill/level plug closer to the top, and has a top and bottom bearing, where as mine has the fill/level plug much lower under the stop bolt, and it uses a top Railko bushing and pin and bottom bearing!

I used EP80/90.....also from what I have read and been told the one shot grease has difficulty getting through the small hole in the Railko bush whereas the thinner oil lubes the top pin better - is what I know...thoughts on this peeps?

I did think it odd considering you pack the CV with Lith/Moly and then fill with an oil..!!

TBH, I thought the point of the EP oil or one shot grease was to lube the CV joint and the swivel bearings. Never thought about packing the CV joint with grease as well.

Cheers

you dont pack the cv with grease ,it has no boot its lubed by the oil or oneshot whichever you fill housing with

One shot is part way between grease and oil - it's runnier than typical tinned grease - so if you've got grease and oil in there it will mix up and make something similar. Anyway, it'll be a lot better than having no lube at all, which is what it was like before.

yes they all are but the grease wont last for life it will need changing and filling as it gets washed into the diff housing
Hi, jamesmartin. Just out of interest how often would you change the swivel grease & how would you drain the old grease off. L.R.say it is in for life or a strip down repair.
I can go with your thoughts on this,Life could be a long time, though it is a land rover
we are talking about & they are prone to leak oil.Cheers

id refill after buying a fresh truck as its an unkown as well as all other oils and service items, so often a service is just engine oil, then if its not leaking or showing transfer to the diff as black diff oil its could for 5 years or more, but normally as these vehicles have some age i find refilling every 2 years, which you do by removing the steel seal retainer and puling seal out and then let it drain whilst i service the rest of the truck, if you go wading etc you should check for signs of water after and refill if there are any
