Hi all,

I'm a newbie. I bought a 90 hardtop on thursday, drove it home 40 miles and it was fine. Jumped in the next day and pottered about for an hour and it was fab.

When to jump in this morning and the engine won't even fire. It's about 6 degrees here so I wouldn't of thought the cold would make an issue?

I've held the glow plugs for ages, pumped the accelerator a bit, tried it without any accelerator, waited an hour and came back to it, but each time it just won't fire at all.

What else can I try?

Might help if you told us what engine it was ? Petrol ? Diesel ? TD5 ? etc ................

Ooh sorry, Its a non turbo diesel

Fuel gauge might be fubbered if you have just got it so start by putting some diesel in it, check you haven't got and fuel/air leak, crack open each injector nut whilst some bod is cranking to make sure you are getting fuel to injectors.

Check fuel filters not blocked-change !

Charge your battery or get a new one as if it's not up to scratch it's not going to happen.

Check that you are getting a + at the cut off switch on the injector pump.

Don't touch the accelerator until it actually starts, mine takes up to a minute of glows if it's really cold but DO NOT pump the accelerator prior to starting as this disengages the cold start.

Does the engine turn ok, just not actually fire up, or does it not even turn over?

Mechanical lift pump might be the culprit. Pop the fuel pipes off and press the prime lever up and down. You should get outward pressure from one pipe and inward suction from the other.... If not then the lift pump is knackered and that is why it will not start i.e. the fuel is simply draining back into the tank. so no fuel getting to the injectors.
