I know there is a model of the MG MGF/TF that has a 1,8L 160 bhp K series engine. Has anyone ever put one of these in a freelander?

Yes they have, i saw one once!

Basically the cylinder head gives it the extra power.

It has larger inlet and exhaust valves

Larger ports

different exhaust manifold/twin downpipe

larger alloy inlet plenum and 52mm throttle body

different profile exhaust camshaft

Variable Valve Control on the inlet cam (the engine actually has 5 camshafts and two timing belts)

this makes a very driveable, economical but punchy engine

Basically its the same engine management system (mems)

but needs a different ecu and engine loom for extra wires etc

You need to make this talk to the bcm 27vt security system and your laughing

nearly as much hp as the v8 boys

Hi if its power ya after and a cheaper fix, there is a company on ebay selling an "electris vortex supercharger" for the freelander at 145 notes, they claim an extra 20 percent in power! Wheather that's true or not I don't know but it might be worth finding out more.

Manx, the electric supercharger thing is an utter con. It's snake oil, about as much use as slippers on a dolphin.

Anyone who buys one of those needs their bumps felt.

Beezlbub, I aint ****in god ya know I just flicked through ebay and thought it might of helped **** I don't know if its a con or not? So ya saying its like rocking hoarse **** then? Ha

Must make getting the head gasket done even more expensive!

Why? its the same head agkest, and the same block.. the parts are the same.. I actually have one of these engines, but not in a freelander, but in a 218VVC coupe. It would be perfect for a freelander, as thanks to the VVC the torque comes in very low down, and the curve is almost flat all the way to 7200 RPM, so don't let the 7200 redline make you think its a screamer, it's not, although you can use it as one!. as for HG's mine has done 60K in the last 18 months, and not driven lightly no HGF yet!

It sort of does make hgf more expensive because if the head has to be skimmed.

The cylinder head takes longer to dissasemble and is very complicated for your average mechanic

Those in the know can do it easy but it might just nudge the cost up

K Series heads should not be skimmed as they have a treated surface which will be removed. There was a factory bulletin published concerning this, damned if I can remember the reference for it mind. The MLS gasket can tolerate a minor amount of distortion, but if it's excessive then the only long term answer is to get a replacement head.

I wouldn't say the VVC mechanism is very complicated, but it certainly isn't straightforward and, like you say, might cost more.

Lesson for you then manx - don't believe these cheap upgrade promises on fleabay. If they were any good they'd be OEM equipment. Same goes for those ion straightening magnet things for the fule line. Waste of time and money.

Best way to approach eeking more from a K is to start with improving the flow in the head and uprate the bottom oil rail etc.
