Hi all,

I have a 110 300TDi 98' with a salisbury rear axle. My half shafts are worn (flange side, didn't check the other side yet) and i'm now looking into either 1 piece half shafts or a 2 piece version. I have looked around on this and other forums but so far couldn't wrap my head around what is a better option. Would like to hear your thoughts on it!

While at it, would it be advisable to get the diff out it's casing for inspection?(Defender has 230K km on the clock)

I would not bother removing the rear diff personally. The Salisbury unit is incredible strong and makes a lot of noise when it is worn so you would know about if it was. I would just swap the shafts out and see what it is like after this, my diff has over double yours distance at 330k miles on it, so your's should be good for a long while yet as long as it has been maintained with fresh oil regularly.

Thanks for the reply will keep the diff as it is. Haven't heard any strange noises except for the worn shafts. Any recommendations on the one or 2 piece half shafts?

Unfortunately can’t help you there as I have never had to replace the shafts. I have done the flanged but the shafts were fine. I would
Stick with the 2 peice ones personally if that is what is currently fitted. I did not realise they fitted one piece shafts to the Salisbury axle. I though they were on the later Rover axles.
 
Don’t think they do a 1-piece shaft for the Salisbury axle, only the Rover one as fitted to 90s, later 110s and D1/RRC.

People have welded the drive flanges to the shaft in the past.
 
I think you both are right, I have mixed them up! Thanks for the replies, will stick to the 2 piece.

I had considered welding drive flanges to half-shafts, but I would think that it would be virtually impossible to get the shaft 100% true. I imagine that any deviation from true would wear the inner ends at the diff and cause all sorts of extra vibrations.
The diff end of the shafts should be OK, they will be soaked in oil from the diff.
If your original shafts and drive flanges have lasted 200,000+ miles, the replacements should be OK for a while.
