Evening,

Just in the process of fitting a new cylinder head to the FL 2001MY following HGF. I've stripped the head from the engine, set the timing marks per the manual.

1. Took the cam sprockets off and the pegs are not lined up in the postions as shown in the manual 8 and 4 o'clock positions, is this normal and set it back up as I found it or rebuild per the manual.

2. Thought about renewing the cambelt but now the head is off, advice seems to be not to move the pistons (which are set half way down the bore) in order to find the correct timing mark but just leave in position left? Due to it being an 'interference' engine!

3. Put the cams back into the carrier and the lobes are not sitting clear of the followers in a couple of places, is this correct? I see it that the carrier is fitted with the lobes on top of follower, so when it is torqued up, a couple of the valves will be open?

Any other issues that I need to be aware of?

Yes I know that some will say why am I even bothering? Not my car (hers)! Enough said!

have you got the inlet and exhaust cams the right way round.

when torqued up a couple of valves will be left open, this afaik is correct

cam carrier will need pulling down carefully with thebolts leave pistons as is ,crank sprocket presumably has both dots aligned with mark ,when you fit cam sprockets fit so pin enters inlet slot on inlet cam ,exhaust slot on exhaust cam ,then just rotate cams so the word inlet faces forward on inlet cam and the word exhaust reawards on exhaust cam align all four marks with a ruler

i think so, just trying to remember after all the work at the weekend?

If not then if it is set up according to the manual will this affect the timing as a result of the crank not being in the correct position?

set it as ive just said that was from a manual at one time ,dont move crank before heads back on ,as long as the 2 dots are either side of mark thats it for crank ,tis very important to get pins in right slot otherwise it wont harm but wont start ,engine timing is set at 90 degrees

ok thanks!

IIRC I didnt take the crank pulley off to check the timing marks, this potentially means that the cams will be in the correct position but not the crank.

So put back together, move the crank to correct position (assuming its not already there), set cams to correct postion, refit belt!

On the K can the cams be moved individually to set them back to position.

Not worked on one of these before!

as long as pistons are in the middle ish ,remove outer crank pulley and align marks once ready to fit belt ,keep front edge of belt tight ie exhaust side ,cams moveseperately and they will hold just in right position but will move quick if distured unless cam locking wedge fitted but its not necessary to use one i dont, turn engine over twice check marks reset if necessary check tensioner ie release and retension ,turn over twice again recheck start engine after refitting the rest

excellent. thanks for your help. I'll give it a whirl!
