You hadn't but it's a very worthwhile link. I've sent it, together with the two-page article up to the workshop
At the moment am waiting back on some sort of reply -- to confirm whether the XYZ Switch is faulty (expect not as gear changes are being indicated) Or from the steering column re-manufacturers for their cost in re-building.

I've had an email back from the article's suppliers of the solenoid magnet BTW. The poster gives a wrong part number from K & J Magnets. Helful email back just now:
"Our B422 is a 1/4" x 1/8" x 1/8" block magnet and our R422 is a 1/4" OD x 1/8" ID x 1/8" thick ring.
You can view all current pricing for these right on our website, by clicking the links provided. We do have these products in stock. Best regards, Steve Maxwell K&J Magnetics, Inc." www.kjmagnetics.com
Great surname!
BTW, for anyone brave enough to do the magnet's change out in the solenoid R422 is the correct one.

I delivered into workshop on evening of 14th

On 16th delivered the new Yuasa battery as they were complaining the old Varta Blue "was a little low". In reality, there was a load stuck on (might be due to steering colum solenoid still stuck in circuit but I don't know what load's presented when not in "sleep mode") that was reducing battery terminal volts by ½V when connected. On my tests that happened even when the new Yuasa was connected in parallel.

Mechanics had done the "pins 1 to 7" kludge by then which allowed one of the now retrained keys to move to position 1 but still did not allow starting of engine. They said that it's either the XYZ Switch or steering column saying they'd had cars in the past with one of each fault.
I saw that the gear selector moved and indicated each position (didn't see any "J" gate selects)
They quoted £580 for a new XYZ Switch and £6,000 for a new steering column, reducing that to £4,000, then to a re-manufactured unit for £2,000.

Since my visit on the 16th I've heard nothing. But I do have one of their loaners ~ a Renault Laguna, Derv (oh the ignamy of being seen in that  ) ~ Neighbours call out when they see me: "How's the Chelsea Tractor?" as they climb into their Nissan Micra chortling ~ )

BBA Reman in Rochester (just down the A2 from me) advertise either a replacement re-built steering column or re-building your own. I emailed them on 19th, no answer as yet

Best I can do for now o_O

Loony Labour Lewisham parking facists do me for not having a resident's permit to "allow" me to park outside my own house: £65 if I pay up now and say no more or £130 if I fight it. Found my paid for ResPark was in SL<oh>3 *** and not SL<zero>3 *** They hadn't checked my uploaded log book for authenticity before issuing my permit ...

Loony Labour Greater London "Authority" tell me that as from 31st March I will be "banned" from the London congestion charge zone 24/7. Unless I pay £12.50 per visit that is. Even though I'm LPG and my emissions are certified down to 8.1 for CO2 and hydrocarbons 107
Apart from that, everything's fine

That Largactyl's nice :p

Further on european emission standards, apparently it's Euro 4 I have to meet
My now sold '01MY XJ8 3.2L met the uLEZ standard.

But with Euro 4 CO2 1.0 g/km, THC 0.10, NMHC -, NOx 0.08, HC+NOx -, PM -, PN -
shown at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_emission_standards#Emission_standards_for_passenger_cars
I'm none too clear on where I now fail under LPG? I don't know what figures (g/km?) are used on the emissions' certificates given out by approved LPG convertors. Mine doesn't say.

Regardless of if you have LPG or not it is all based on what the vehicle type is registered as with the DVLA....

I've sent my L322's log book up to DVLA together with an engine modification written in it as "Bi-Fuel"
Although there's no listing of alternative engine categories on the DVLA web site, I've seen that
before on other V5s. And sent in a copy of the '09 conversion certificate.

I wrote to TfL as invited on their website last week. No reply as yet.
My previous makes' enthusiasts' club (JEC) are trying, together with their umbrella organistation,
to negotiate something with TfL and other "authorities" for classic cars. It seems many "authorities"
not just TfL, are applying with glee this further restriction against the private motorist.

Of course, if you don't mind paying the £12.50 then your obviously not a polluter

The euro regulation that all this is based on is wrong. Latest UK research found that diesel particulates are the most evil form of combusion engine carcnogen now in the air. Programmes sponsored throughout the EU that price promote through taxation Derv against petrol (been over to Eire four times this past year and there's at least a 15p difference less for Derv against petrol) are just plain wrong

They're even trying to ban burning of any material (not just coal) in your fireside grate. Whatever next? "Banning" of Guy Fawkes bonfires? Or how about barbeques?

It is the vehicle as made by Land Rover...not the individual vehicle from what I know....

It is how the L322 Range Rover as a vehicle is registered with the DVLA regardless of additional modifications added post manufacture....the L322 emissions as logged when the design of the vehicle was tested that is logged and this is what the DVLA/TfL etc base their emission information on.....and from the factory the L322 won't meet the new restrictions - it could run on angel dust or virgins tears - it matters not - it is what the vehicle emissions were when the vehicle was tested during design and development.

You fail to mention the amount of ordinance that has been used in the past or have they developed "green"cruise missiles?

Now that would explain a lot about the L322's behaviour . The damn things are on drugs 41GH2D+fYzL._SY355_.jpg

I've now had the benefit of the mechanics' shop invoice for work so far
Apparently they want to charge me £75 +VAT for the diagnostics.
AND £75 +VAT for the labour to carry out the diagnostics

They claim to have installed an OEM from main dealer XYZ Switch explaining:
"When attempting to start vehicle displayed message is saying that it is in gear rather than park or neutral"
Well I didn't see that. All the times I tried it was in Park and showing P on the indicator. When I lifted the shifter's cover to lift the black plastic lever to allow the gear lever to move to neutral, N was shown on the indicator. But it of course might be the case that despite indicators showing correctly, the XYZ Switch wasn't also allowing correct interlock signals through... (?)

"Supplied and fitted XYZ Switch. When trying to start vehicle it is now selecting neutral or park. However vehicle will still not start. Recommend replacement of steering column. ZYX Switch £461.60 +VAT Labour to carry out above 2 hours @ £75/hour +VAT"

Now this is where the forward work appears
"Remove and refit steering column and take to BBA Reman at cost and collect once re-furbished Labour 3 hours @£75/hour +VAT, module programing £81.50 +VAT

They have AutoLogic there

They are really seeing you off on the diagnostics, they can't charge twice unless you are going to keep the diagnostic kit afterwards.

They are also seeing you off on the price of the XYZ switch which probably didn't even need changing but you are stuck and two hours labour is ridiculous.

Unless you are going to get yourself some diagnostic kit and also some spanners I would say your range rover is going to become uneconomical to repair very quickly using that garage.

It takes about 20 minutes to connect up my faultmate and run through every system, 1/2 hours labour for an independent should cost around £40 + Vat I would say if that.

Get it put on a trailer and take it to Angus and Howard, they are as straight as a straight thing ! They also have Autologic.

I also question the need to change the XYZ switch - I did make mention that any decent diagnostics able to read live info should report the XYZ switch positions correspond with the selector position - I did a vid to prove it but haven't yet uploaded it!

Thanks for your replies. I've had a response back from the workshop. They do offer a one year warranty on parts.
I spoke with Angus but he can't take in until last week of March.

Workshop confirms they'll return my old XYZ switch, and are relaxed about me taking the removed steering column the 15 miles to BBA Reman in Rochester offering me a ½ hour credit for that. And collecting.
Spoke with BBA Reman who will not quote for re-build without seeing the steering column first.
They offer "a lifetime warranty so long as the same person owns the vehicle".

I hope there's some DC continuity checks I can do on the old XYZ switch to confirm its faulty? Look forward to your vid. Or does it need a supply to be tested on the bench (in my case nowadays kitchen worktop and a cheeepo LCD multimeter, no 'scope, no nuffink ;-)
A new OEM XYZ switch UHB500020 from Beadles Sidcup is trade £403.60 +VAT

Do search for XYZ Switch by a member called Bemble on here (he is also known as RRPhil - and is a fecking genius on these boxes) he has posted several times how to check the XYZ switch using a simple multimeter.

The guy is fecking legend. I'll see if I can find a post of his.....

Check did post out from the fecking legend that is Bemble (RRPhil)

Will show you the XYZ switch and how to test its functions using a meter......I will also see if I can post that vid of the diagnostics showing Live Data on the XYZ.

I didn't know that the two displays it controls (gearstick selector indicator, and dash gear indicator)
are controlled by two separate circuits. I only saw the one display at gear selector. Luckily I didn't get
strident with workshop as their report "when attempting to start vehicle the displayed message is saying that it is in gear rather than park or neutral" refers to the dash display, not the gearstick selector indicator which is all I noted

When I get the old switch back next week sometime (column's off to BBA Reman which workshop confirms they've used before with no issues) will be able to check it out with Bemble's excellent post with pix and truth table

Yes, thanks for the heads up. I'm a bit nervous about parts claiming to be "OEM" but sold in a "plain box". Been burned like that in my VW days.
So I'd already told this shop that I wanted "real OEM". The price they gave me was half way between full retail and trade and comes from another main dealer. They also say they only supply and fit real OEM anyway coz of their warranty conditions -- I assume that means that they have some trade protection policy covering the one year parts and labour they offer.
Still miffed about those diagnostics charges though -- so have said so but in normal conversation. No sense in getting or causing anyone to be upset. At this stage

The l322 is a really nice vehicle when all is well, i have owned mine for a few years now and all is basically ok, the engine has a bit of a rattle which i think is the vanos units i have rebuilt but it drives perfectly. It should do though as most of it has been replaced. The parts are getting cheaper but there are few garages that really understand them and they can get astronomically expensive very quickly if you can't fix them yourself or you haven't got a friendly indie close by.

There are dozens of spares or repairs vehicles on ebay, especially the early bmw m62 4.4 petrol version mainly due to timing chain guide failure which is easy when you know how or the transmission which is basically great and very repairable if you again know how, or as i did, know a few people that do. (Bemble and Saintv8)

Regarding the OEM parts, you have a BMW so there are many BMW parts that are genuine but without the Land Rover badge on the packet that doubles the price.
