Hi all,
Thought i'd finally get round to starting the thread to help motivate me and ensure I take pictures and to guide me through rather than making loads of other threads for the many problems I face. My landy is a 1972 88" 2.25d, which was rescued from the neighbouring farm after sitting for many years. It has taught me everything so far in the 2 years ive had and faffed with it, and i learn it all as i go, with the goal to get it on the road in great shape. As I write this it's not in great shape, but has come a long way. Alot of odds and bobs have already been done to it since having it, but it is currently only chassis, bulkhead, engine etc. and drives. I have recently motivated myself (this summer) to take the scary bulkhead off, engine out, and all other necessary major parts to get it done properly, but its these jobs that i'll face the most struggle with soon. Hope this thread is even slightly interesting to those more with it than me!

is that how the exhaust was or have you done that to reduce noise while you tinker with it?

It's been keeping it quiet while tinkering spot on, chassis only dodgy at the rear, has had some messy patching done at some point in life, bulkhead though is here and there, quite inconsistent, the bottom support passenger side is rotted on about half the pillar, and both footwells were rotted out but I've been practising some fibreglass on passenger one which worked really well actually so that one looks alright, the upper part of the bulkhead is covered in a near inch thick layer of filler, and the very top where windshield sits seems to be rusty down into the dash kinda region, but some parts look alright, only taking everything off it will reveal its true colours!

Rad and front end out today and starting on de cluttering the bulkhead, getting some pics of the bad bits of it. Got the news today of getting in the fire service and won't be training for a while so should give me a year of free time to get the project done!!

Get all the 'extras' off the bulkhead and put a load of pictures up. I think that we may be advising you to swallow your pride and scrap that bulkhead and buy a better one to work on. Fibreglass will almost certainly be an MOT fail - in it's place it is a great material, but even using epoxy resin you'll not get a good diy bond to steel. If you're using polyesters there is no chance of a good bond.

I reckon the more advise i get to drop it the happier i'll be getting rid of it as its pretty inevitable, theres so many naff areas and what isnt rusted through is bent and busted. Its something id wanna invest in and would save alot of time, thats 10 years in a field on those footwells!

Update after a while, spent a tough time in the heatwave and have got the bulkhead off, and my back burnt, i still need to take lots off of it like wiring, steering components, pedals etc. and some more dash, but at least its off in a day. Hoping to get a new (refurbed) one from somewhere such as classic bulkheads after doing research, as mine is stuffed beyond my developing skill set, or anyones. So only engine and tranny left on the rolling chassis!

I also discovered that the vents had been covered over somehow by a metal plate across the front with some filler too, i had to bust off the nearside sill, and regards wiring i have only labelled bunches of wires together with what part they link to in general, as a slight assistance maybe in the future, hoping to redo the lot as was a mess, lots of unconnected cables and filthy terminals etc. Have a lot to practice with with this wiring!

I have had the idea to remove the engine and trans as one, in the hope that might save me time, just to repaint the engine and clean up the box while i get the chassis back to scratch, as i reckon i might do any service and engine maintenance and restoring sometime in the later future rather than now while everything is apart and filling my workshop

No reason you couldnt do it with that able looking tractor and front loader!

I would use lifting chains with the loader for the engine and trans though, polyprop rope is brinky with heavy stuff.

Hey Tman, using the tractor for the bulkhead was a bit lazy tbh but very easy to move about! I will find some good chains im sure we have some fit to lift thor's hammer, i have my uncles old engine crane which ive never used, but also dont trust, so tractor'll do but im not sure where to put it all (what to put it on) once its out, so it doesnt get damaged and i can actually do a little work on it

Well within the capabilities, at a guess that loader would lift 2 tonnes.

Try using big wood blocks to stand the engine and gearbox on, either under the actual mounts, or other strong points, not the sump.

You probably did a much better job of removin everything off of it first though, i couldve just picked the whole landy up in the air by the bulkhead until it all snapped free!

You could try forum search rather than hijacking his good fred!

But you want 15/40 mineral multigrade oil, and put a bit of ecomax or similar in the fuel from time to time, help lubricate the DPA pump. Try and keep the fuel tank as full as possible all the time as well.
