I played with Meccano sets.

Now I'm a big kid, I play with Land Rovers.

They're basically the same thing :)

My 110 doesn't leak, but it took a lot of sealant to get it that way. Never used any on meccano though, have used sealant on the shed for what also used to be a meccano product. Hornby trains.

Yes, it's still going. Though with a variety of different products that didn't exist in my day. http://www.meccano.com/

Only had a quick look, but it appears that Meccano has gone the same way as Lego.
Gone are the days of a big box of bits and build what your imagination tells you to. Now it's a case of "here are the bits you'll need to build the thing in the picture on the box".
Nothing more than a metal jig-saw puzzle ....... There's no fun in that!

Still I suppose it'll prepare you for flat pack furniture in later life.

the sets look crap compared to what we got back in the day ... i used to modify my radio controlled cars with meccano, i once made an 8 wheel truck, 4 wheel drive, 4 wheel steering, and put and tray on the back just for firework rockets. clocked it just over 60mph once before it exploded ... then i rebuilt it and did it again. i miss my childhood

A couple of months ago I came across an Automat kit and subsequently purchased it. I could not pass it by.
Its an Automat 2000 I believe it was purchased in the 1960's by the company I got it off and never used, the components were all complete and still rapped in their protective rappers.
The 2000 is not listed on their web site but it has 5 trays of parts in a sturdy wooden box and weights about 40Kg, its a shame to open the packets after so long resting.

As a wee boy I had hours of fun with it and taught me basis logic of bolting things together and basic design. A computer is no substitute for that. My son is doing civil engineering at uni and for their projects they actually have to build real models.

I realised how a differential works as soon as I saw one, made from Meccano, at a Schoolboys Exhibition, some time in the '50s. I used to love those exhibitions!
