right TD5 r380 box 130.With a pto driven winch can I also add a overdrive unit to it?

Ive not looked underneath yet but it drinks fuel like fook, been remamped for power but thats ruined the fuel economy i think .So when on the motorway with the plant on the back it could do with gearing up without loseing the hi range first gear size as its quite heavy most days....

Disco transfer box should do the trick.

Blanked the EGR?
no it wont its too higher geared if you read my post i have mentioned i dont want to changer the transfer as i need to maintain the current gear ratios..

blanking the egr is not how to gear up the wagon now is it...

use low box when maneuvering etc
do that all ready its a 130 with cab height toolbox and tipper box.TBF the engines good and works well pulls up to 60 nice and quick with the trailer its just the top end that needs sorting for the long runs.....
ill get at it and see where the pto shaft runs through,i seem to remember modding a td5 90 to get a pto superwinch on it. cant remember if the overdrive fits in there as well...

over drive and pto both fit on rear of input gear so either or, unless they made pto driven off underside of t/box which they did for series but cant say ive ever seen one for defender

Bob what is the ratio of your diffs? you could have 4:10/11 as that would about be top speed 60 before it to struggle, could explain poor MPG as that ratio drinks more

I thought that may be the case for the pto shaft, and overdrive unit.ill look in the morning.

lord only knows what gearing it has really but its low....its done at 65mph and drinks.however around villages and back lanes its geared nice.seems to be like the 90 and runs around 45mph best with good low end grunt.that has to remain in place so thats why i wondered about overdrive.gunna be a leccy winch then to fit overdrive..........this could be expensive to add on the required bits.

can i fit a 1.222 transfer without makeing 1st gear taller if the axles are low ratio too?

its easy enough to check diff ratio, with one wheel jacked up ,changing t/box ratio will effect all high gears ,some do fit 4.1 ratio diff instead of perhaps too high 3.54 std or too low 4.7 lrs other diff fitted to series and some specials

Lots of low end power and good to go in 45-50MPH= 4:10's then and about 6-8 mpg less than the 3.54 rear diffs

You may even have a 1:667 ration gear box check the code number on it 2 numbers and a letter you are looking for

yep does 12mpg at best hmmm the plot thickens then.ill make a list of all the ratios then and see which is the best option on saving money...did half a tank to work and back with the plant trailer on down the dual carrage way on something that ought be less than quater tank.pulls nice tho.:D

horror is its a 100l tank.......

Check the damn transfer case could be stamped with the correct number and save you all the bull **** of making the list of all the ratios:rolleyes:

main gearbox has been replaced with ashcroft so is quite new..will check that first then get the rest of the numbers.got a full service to do tomoz so bar any trouble with filters and the gauze in the fuel pump to clean there is time to play around :D

the whole unit with the trailer is 40ft long..:D

is that to haul your ladder for changing light bulbs:rolleyes:

I've got a Td5 110 hard top and tow a 3.5 tone tipper regularly and a fast tow timber trailer/timber grab with an Alpine tractor on top.

when I first got it towing was crap compared to my old Tdi but had it chipped recently and fitted a Roverdrive for motorway stuff.

Makes a big difference, no trailer I'm getting 32/33mpg on a run and with trailer still getting 350 - 400 miles per tank.

Getting it chipped now means it still pulls with the overdrive engaged and without the trailer it'll pull in first with overdrive engaged no probs.....

if you read my post the winch runs off the pto ...:emps1::rolleyes:

Like it or not you can only have one device bolted to the pto

You need to look at payback times really. I would love an o/do but at £1500 it's going to take years to pay for itself. Add into that the cost of replacing the winch with an electric one, possibly a new winch bumper, twin electrics and all the extra hidden costs, then it may pay you to keep shovelling fuel in instead.

The o/do at best is only going to slightly improve your fuel consumption. I agree about the transfer gears, if you regularly tow a heavy load then they are a pain. As for changing the differentials at the same time that would leave you with the same poor gearing.

As it is a business tool then I think you really need to look at payback time of the assets.

I hate to say it but I would be tempted to keep it as it is if it's configured for the job it already does
