I want to put a battery isolator into my defender, but not just a normal one, i want to be able to control it with either a key or switch on the dash board? is it possible with anything such as relays?

IF you have any ideas it would be great!

or if you want a smaller switch, any old key switch and a 12V 128A contactor, might not last too long though with the starting current being so high.
isolator key switch would be the best way to go.

The battery box is inside the cab so just pu this coming through the seatbox, easiest, simplest and most effective way....

A contactor is a type of relay, usually rated for more A than relays.

don't forget, the starting current to start the engine is up to 1000A, thats one hell of a current to go through a relay.
Even the battery isolators are rated for that current for a limited period.

had a look though my catalogues, non seem to be rated that high.

I fitted mine in the front of the passenger side of the seat box, works fine as long as you tighten the battery clamp

A high amperage contractor maybe ok.. As the contactor is not breaking high current. The contactor is merely an isolator. If the contactor was controlling the starter then no not suitable.. If a contactor is rated at 100 amps it means it can make or break contact under load of 100 amps.. (In theory)

But the solinoid on the starter is the switch in this case..

You should be able to get one from a comercial vehicle spares place,
ADR vehicles (tankers and the like) have them and others have them as battery savers
Large vans are comercial and 12v

The likes of Demon Tweeks or any of the Motorsport suppliers will sell you a remote button electrical cut off isolator, but they are not cheap.

you can get key type ones to go on the seat box. By locking the seatbox lid down too will make it even more secure.
