Hi All RR running nicely :D but only cloud (for now) is the rev counter not working at all. :mad: Have checked the fuses, all OK. Any ideas why the rev counter may not be working at all?

I have changed the u/s alternator and the RR lives again but now the rev counter doesn't work. Have I disconnected something I shouldn't or simply not replaced a connection?

Had a similar problem myself with the Series. Fixed the fuel not getting to the carb problem but found that one of the connections wasn't tight enough so not enough power getting to starter motor. Tightened all battery connections up and started straight away. Good luck, let us know how you get on.

Thank you for all suggestions. Eventually took photos of alternator in engine bay and emailed them to parts supplier. Tech blokes looked at it and one is now on its way to me. I will post when I know for certain which model it turned out to be. Thanks to Saint for very quick, informative post.

Car parts place have told me that it could be one of two different types (2 wire or 3 wire)? Does anyone know where I could find a serial number or model number on the alternator? All I could see under the bonnet today, albeit in failing light and a torch, was LUCAS and Made in UK - fat lot...

Have ordered a replacement off eB** and a S2 club member locally has offered to help me to fit it, so a good result all around. Very keen now to learn how to do it myself with the safety net of having a friend around. Tea and bacon sarnies should make it even easier! Thanks all for your helpful...

Turns out the alternator is toast, not the engine, thankfully. Any ideas for cost of replacement and fitting??

Hi All. Driving home tonight the car started "phut phut" sounds underneath, losing power, progressively until it died. Oil light came on at this point (?) and strong smell of something. Any initial ideas??

Hi All The rear panels either side of the lower tailgate have gone crispy over time. I have GRP replacements but have no idea how to remove the old ones and refit the new. Does anyone have a link/pdf/instructions, please?:)

Thanks for the answers - the lacquer deteriorating makes perfect sense. I have nothing to lose by removing some lacquer in a test area and seeing the state of the paint underneath. Best outcome would be the paint being OK underneath and protecting again with a good wash and wax but I just...
