I think it was white, it's been producing every possible colour of smoke in copious so I can't remember exactly what happened when. It's mostly calmed down now that it's had a chance to burn off whatever crap has been floating around in there.

It seems the lift pump is being a bit naughty in the Landy, it still manages to start but takes a lot of effort. Could this be the cause of smoke from the exhaust when lifting off the accelerator?

Battery should be around 13V with no load and around 14V with the alternator running

It has tried to fire a couple of times, but no go. Once the batteries are charged in going to have another go at it, and then get a mechanic friend to have a look at it.

Cheers Paul, I am hoping to avoid that sort of drastic action. The bores were all ok when I had the head off, there was a slightly mysterious bit of damage to the top of no3 piston. I'm considering a complete landy swap when I get it running again.

I did them twice over when I replaced the head, and again when it failed to start. As I said earlier, I've narrowed it down to compression.

I've tried easy start, it didn't help. I've got both batteries out now for charging, all these attempts at starting have flattened them

It overheated big style and the AA kindly brought it home for me. We've put a brand new head on it big it just doesn't want to start . I've checked that it's got diesel at all injectors, put a new fuel filter on. I suspect it's got compression issues now

Yes, and then again no. Without voltage there would be no current flow, and the higher the voltage the easier it is to get a higher current flow.
