Climbed under the car today and located the starter motor only to find the bottom bolt was missing and the other two were so loose that the whole unit was nearly out. (this will be why it wasn't making contact with the flywheel). I tightened the two existing bolts up and it fired up right away...

Am I right in thinking that the solenoid drives the cog onto the engine flywheel and the starter motor just turns over if the solenoid fails?

Done that, can't move it much though or it will be stranded on the road, would it make a difference that it is automatic? Is there a chance I have lost all the teeth on the starter ring?
