Had another look this morning and even using the carb itself to rev the engine, it won't climb above a certain point and what sounds like some kind of relay, (a high tappet noise), is not happy and seems to be inhibiting the revs from climbing.
There's definately a throttle cable as i've revved the engine from under the bonnet using it.
The engine did rev when throttle pressed down, but revs wouldn't climb significantly.
What is the best battery to buy then guys and from where. My Defender battery seems to lose its charge relatively quickly so i'm searching for a new one. (a garage has said the electrics are all fine).

Just had to power pack jump start my defender. Drove ok for two miles and then was left at just over idle to help charge the battery. 20 minutes later there appeared to be a slightly higher tappet noise from the engine and it wouldn't rev to any height at all and i've had to limp back to home...
