Can anyone give me a clue as to which size to get, ive bought a 800 amp battery at halfrauds but want to make sure its up to the job

More than enough, I think they recommend 600CCA for the Defender TD5, the one you found would be perfect, the bigger the better, however don't buy it in Halfrauds though. I got a 850CCA (cold crank amps) and 100Ah battery, suited to a tractor - I could drive about on the starter motor it's so good.

Thats the only problem, doesnt say what Ah it is... is that important

If it's 800 it will be high enough, but TMHM can check for you, the big number is the amperage it can deliver at 0°F -18°C which is important for starting the engine, if it's too low, no starting!

The Ah is how long it can deliver 1 amp for, so 100Ah would be 1 amp for 100 hours, or 2 for 50hrs etc...

I bought the HB019 from halfords, in the chart there was nothing listed for the td5 defender... but the TD5 disco listed the above battery (800cca) for a deisel so i went for this.

Now ive fitted it, its starting but only after 10 seconds or so from cold, and even when warm doesnt fire up straight away and doesnt seem to spin fast enough

Im sure its the battery , but want to make sure before i take it back :doh:

HB019 is 800cca - 95Ah at 20hour rate. Reserve 160Amp. Size 253x175x190mm

What is the best battery to buy then guys and from where. My Defender battery seems to lose its charge relatively quickly so i'm searching for a new one. (a garage has said the electrics are all fine).

First of all get yo battery AND alternator tested at Halfrauds or similar. Get a printout at the same time.


the largest CCA battery you can fit.
Lots of peeps recomend going to a farm supplier.

Yeps, as MHM says...mine went today...i really want an optima red-top but can't wait a week for delivery from the UK. For some reason i can't get them here so i'm having to try an unknown brand...gulp.. its 100Ah..800cca and £90...its got a 3 year guarantee so i'm expecting/hoping it lasts til April
