Could be the top rubber intercooler hose. When this hose is old, and especially when warm, this hose contracts/collapses under load, creating a major restriction of air. then you get heaps of black smoke and bugger all power.

Ive actually jumpered the condensor fans so that they were permanent on, and tried it out. The bloody car still overheats.
