    Crunching still

Evening! Thought I’d report back to close this off. It’s done, and works! No crunches up or down the gears, hi and low all good, 4x4 good, overdrive works great… no odd noises… so pleased.. I ended up changing a few things at once, which isn’t normally the way as you never know what change...

Thanks. It was correct… but the old one appears to be wrong, but it worked which is odd. Doesn’t matter as that’s going in the bin.

So, I’m in the box. As I’ve mentioned, the Layshaft was new… however your question here is ringing in my ears.. I have managed to remove the bearing from the end of the Layshaft as I was hoping to use it on another and switch it out. I then dug out the original layshaft and the bearing it still...

    Crunching still

Hey, thanks for that… I’m not alone! Jeeze I’ve just splashed a **** tonne of cash on some more parts… so, I think, every part will have been replaced now with genuine parts apart from synchros… so it’ll be them.. I’ll check out the videos.. I’ve used steam wally so far. I’m not going to...

I tried this last time… didn’t do anything to help. Is Moly ok with the yellow metals?

    Crunching still

Ah, it’s a “NOS” Layshaft, as reverse was buggered on the original, and not the original spacer but one I thought was right for it… I am convinced the new roller bearing was fitted the right way around… but I’m obviously not very good at this.. lol I did find it difficult to measure the...

Spoke to a man in the know… he thinks to put the old 3/4 selector back, and check the Layshaft tolerance. If the Layshaft is tight, when warm could be dragging…

    Crunching still

I’m pretty sure it’s ok. The clutch bite is quite high, the gears work fine initially too. I guess if the clutch is left engaged slightly, it’ll make hard work for the synchros. I’ll investigate.

Ah, no, it didn’t wear in. This is after rebuilding it again… it’s quite frustrating I’ve trawled all the forums for something similar… not seeing much to provide any clues tbh.

Hi… hope someone can help! S3 SWB 2.25petrol. Third time of trying to get my gearbox working well, and it’s still not good. Most previous issues have been sorted, but I am left with gears crunching the warmer the gearbox gets. This is mostly from 4 to 3, but also 4 or 3 to 2. When cold...

    Missing reverse

Had some in back order for months at Craddocks… they just refunded me as there is any available it seems.. I have used a complete new Bearmach unit, so might have some on my old unit if you are welcome to… I’ll have a look if interested..

    rebuilding gearbox question

I have some of these washers left over from my early S3 ‘box rebuild. If anyone needs one, let me know the size and I’ll check what I’ve got… they have the tabs, and they slide straight on with the tab in the spline. They are genuine ones from Blanchard… so might be useful..

    Lurching Series 3

Mine had this. Turned out the fuel inlet to the filter bowl housing wasn’t tight, and under load sucked air in. I was looking to check the seal of the glass bowl to the filter housing, as I think air can be sucked in if it’s deteriorated, but that was ok, as was the pump diaphragm.

    Rebuilt gearbox

Has anyone experience of Liqui Moly gearbox additive? Someone’s suggested it to help a newly built gearbox with lower tolerances used. Could it do any harm in this gearbox?

    Rebuilt gearbox

Nope, it’s just ****e. Drove to Belvoir Castle, and I’m surprised i got back. Good news is the steering, brakes and cooling (even in the heat of yesterday) are great now. Bad news is the 1/2 gear selection is still tight… but worst news is that 3/4 are a fricking nightmare. All ok from cold...

Diesel Heater - I’m having a go at fitting

Thanks. Useful info. It’s a petrol s111 so need a diesel tank, and yes I’m using some hard fuel line. I’ve gone for a 2 kw one as it was smaller to fit in the seat box, and came with 60mm ducting, so I’ll see how it goes… hope it’s up to it! Ha, the gearbox has just gone back in… after I...

Diesel Heater - I’m having a go at fitting

Hi, a few pics of the start of my diesel heater install. Going quite well, but any comments welcome… Small tank will be going at the top of the rear wheel arch in a simple bracket. A sealed inspection hatch next to the rear bench seat will allow filling, and no vapours in the cabin.

    |Where does this fit? series 3 swb 1983 88

I think SWB has a more narrow one on the right, due to the fuel tank location.

    Rebuilt gearbox

Ha, I’m looking forward to forgetting tbh! End up dreaming about the bloody thing… The reverse gear does slide, with the selector arm removed etc, and engaged just fine, but only when the 1st/2nd selector hub was in a certain position.. when the main shaft is turned say 180degrees the idler...
