Thanks for all your suggestions! I've traced it back to an intermittent fault with the wiring plug which connects to the fuel pump unit. After eliminating some of the other possibilities this seems to be the likely culprit! Thanks again!

Thanks GrumpyGel, it was just a thought as the engine starts but then cuts out and won't restart until it's been left a while. Will have a look at the ignition switch Turboman and let you know! :-)
