Hello there, can anyone help please? My 1.8 petrol freelander has just developed a starting problem. When I turn the key, the fuel pump doesn't prime, the car starts but quickly stalls. I've the battery in the key fob replaced and had the fuel pump and fuel inertia cut off valve replaced a little while ago. Has anyone got any ideas? Many thanks, Tishy

Can you get it to run at all?

Sounds like either your fuel pump or fuel pump relay is playing up...

Hello B34R, it runs okay when it does start. The problem seems to occur when I stop and then return to the vehicle, but not every time. The fuel pump has been recently changed. I had wondered if it could be to do with the immobiliser as it is so intermittent but think that could just be a red herring? Will have a look at the pump relay though. Thanks :)

The immobiliser forms the earth on the starter relay - so if the car was immobilised, the starter motor would not turn. As your starter is turning, I presume the car is not immobilised - unless someone has done some rewiring!

Thanks GrumpyGel, it was just a thought as the engine starts but then cuts out and won't restart until it's been left a while.

Will have a look at the ignition switch Turboman and let you know! :)

If the switch were at fault it will basically turn the car off - so you need to turn something on that's controlled by the ignition switch (eg hand brake for hand brake light on dash, radio or heater. If it goes out at the same time the engine cuts, then its the switch.

My money is on the fuel pump. It's suffering heat soak after shut down.
Was the pump cartridge itself changed, or the whole assembly with the filter and level sensor?

Ok I've narrowed it down a bit, it only happens when the engine is warm I never have a problem starting first time in the morning. We can rule out the switch as everything works radio, dash lights, etc. There is obviously a spark because the engine will fire and run, it cuts out due to lack of fuel. The fuel pump was changed about 3 years ago and I'm not sure if it was the cartridge or the whole assembly changed but this problem has only started recently.

Thanks for all your suggestions! I've traced it back to an intermittent fault with the wiring plug which connects to the fuel pump unit. After eliminating some of the other possibilities this seems to be the likely culprit! Thanks again!
