thanks, back to the drawing board today! re-fitted points that came with distributor from paddock and it all works fine....just need to get timing set properly now, so much for breakerless ignition! Thanks to all for info.

Thanks Redhand, bought strobe timing light today and have set it bang on TDC, also checked cylinder 1 for TDC on compression to determine lead 1 from distributor. Thinking it may be faulty distributor cap after reading various other comments on here!
