Hi, I am new to the LZ and Series Land Rovers and wondered if anyone could help me? I have a landy fitted with a late series 3 petrol engine. it was running fine, albeit a little thirsty so I decided to fit the breakerless electronic ignition to replace the points (bought from Brookwell), to do this i had to change the distributor so bought the Lucas type from Paddocks together with new set of leads and spark plugs. Fitted the breakerless ignition and distributor with new leads and plugs and problems.... it runs on tickover fine but won't rev up, just coughs and splutters and cuts out. Does any one have any ideas? I have set the timing with strobe light and have checked all leads. Thanks in anticipation

Thanks Redhand, bought strobe timing light today and have set it bang on TDC, also checked cylinder 1 for TDC on compression to determine lead 1 from distributor. Thinking it may be faulty distributor cap after reading various other comments on here!

Best not to try driving any distance because the ignition timing is probably RETARDED by a long way, which makes the engine run VERY HOT inside, and very hot often means hot enough to do harm, like melt a piston or something.

thanks, back to the drawing board today! re-fitted points that came with distributor from paddock and it all works fine....just need to get timing set properly now, so much for breakerless ignition! Thanks to all for info.

You should be far better off when using the breakerless ignition system.

Rub white chalk on the timing marks to you can see them clearly on the run.

Get the engine running with the points in, and with the engine running, use your strobe and a remote tacho to note the ignition advance at say 2,000 rpm.

Now fit the breakerless system, and with the engine running at 2,000 rpm again, rotate the distributor till the same advance is reached still at 2,000 rpm.

After that it should be fine tuning only.

So in conclusion what does everyone think about theses Electronic points replacments (ETC5835K)? as i was thinking of getting a set.

i think them is just more electronic stuff to go wrong. the reason you still have series landies running about is the lack of complicated stuff on them. simple and cheap to fix. you can usually get a points system to fire up enough to get you home, unless yer out in the middle of a desert. electronic stuff is a bit more difficult to bodge into working.

and as fer timing the 2.25 injun yer better orf chucking the timing light and strobe , and use yer ear to listen to the engine.
you can then tune it to your particular engine instead of a theorical bench model.

I tend to agree with Lord Slob - up to a point.

It's just that breakerless ignition is very reliable and shoots tremendous sparks, and it does help everything.

I like the ignition kits that use the points as the trigger for transistorised sparks. These have a switch on the box. One way is transitorised ignition, the other way reverts to normal. You can tell the difference immediately.

The way to tell the difference is to stick a finger up a plug lead, and feel it.
