    TD5 overheating the saga continues!!!

Rad not feeling like it gets overly hot anywhere and engine does not have that red hot smell. And the only time anything comes out of the overflow is when I lift the expansion tank above the level of the overflow.

    TD5 overheating the saga continues!!!

My old cap was leaking hence the replacement no oil in coolant or vice versa no sign of "mayonnaise" at all and as far as I can tell no smell of exhaust gas. I take it the feed in to the expansion tank you refer to is the small return pipe from the radiator? I can not say I noticed any flow...

    TD5 overheating the saga continues!!!

It has been a process of elimination so far. I had an idea the thermostat was sticking so removed it from the housing to take away that questionmark. with the cap off and engine cool I saw no noticeable bubbles in the expansion tank but I did get some small amount coming through the bleed hole...

    TD5 overheating the saga continues!!!

Hi Guys. I am still having problems with an overheating TD5 Discovery. Things done so far Bled the system thoroughly, completely removed thermostat to allow freeflow of water, New expansion tank cap and finally today tried to check water pump but not to sure what I have found. \with bleed screw...

    Help TD5 overheating problem

The only component I found with any real heat was that top part of the top hose . Even the header tank was fairly cool.

    Help TD5 overheating problem

I will try your suggestion at work tomorrow with the bleed screw I never thought to doubt the integrity of the water pump. The radiator hardly felt hot at all. I would think this must now point towards either radiator blocked right up or water pump failing as very likely culprits.

    Help TD5 overheating problem

I currently have no stat in there the heater will get warm for a while until she overheats. The radiator didn't feel hot at all. also the pipe that goes down from the top rad hose to the metal branch pipe underneath hardly felt warm at all

Latest update is that after a good re bleed and getting it thoroughly hot again I have the top radiator pipe roasting hot and all the others only warm to the touch. Thoughts please?

    Help TD5 overheating problem

I think I may drop the rad out and give it a good blow through in case it is blocked up anywhere. At the end of the day it is 16 years old most likely so could be carrying a fair amount of crap internally.

    Help TD5 overheating problem

I have heard about that pipe leaking but I think it is fairly sound at the moment although I will re check it now you mention it. My main leak started with a rotten core plug in behind the starter motor and then once that was done it has just been the overheating problem. My water level seems to...

    Help TD5 overheating problem

Thanks very much for your help. The depth of the knowledge on this site is amazing. I had extensive knowledge of series 3 land rovers but still very much a novice with the TD5 if checking the cooling system and giving the system a thorough re bleed don't give me an answer then I will probably...

Would this not cause it to run rough though having water in the cylinder during combustion? You will have to pardon my ignorance if my question sounds silly!

Thanks very much that is a little more detailed than the Haynes version I will give that a go in the Morning

    Help TD5 overheating problem

I have followed that in the Haynes manual only. which is to raise the header tank with the top hose bleed screw removed until water emerges then retighten screw and top up to level

    Help TD5 overheating problem

I take the grub screw out of the top hose and wait for water to emerge is there any other way of bleeding the air out of the system?

To be fair not checked the rad but have a new Thermostat to go in as I removed the last one to let it freeflow in case it was the stat. But I never even thought about the expansion tank cap
